zx2000 , VMS 8.3 can not install
I've been lucky enough to have been borrowed a VMS 8.3 install DVD. Thank you.
I am having a large amount of issues trying to get it to install.
I do have the DVD rom on the Master via cable select on the HDD cable not the optical IDE cable.
I am also using IDE disks until my SCSI card gets here.
Receiving error "DQ - Medium not ready"
Heres the detailed information
Hoping someone can help me with this.
I've been pulling my hair out for a wile now.
Thanks

You must use the Harddisk-IDE-cable instead of
the Opticaldisk-cable.

Thanks, But I am using the IDE HDD cable and not the optical cable.
I am not even getting to the OpenVMS banner.
I boot the vms_loader
then DQ - medium not ready
then the error

Re: zx2000 , VMS 8.3 can not install
As for the error, IPB looks to be blowing up here.
The IPB IDE ATA path is broken.
OpenVMS Alpha DS10 and DS10L were the only boxes that officially booted off IDE ATA disks. And only small ATA disks (<137GB) are supported even there.
I don't recall anybody that has particularly tried anything other than DVD bootstraps on IDE ATAPI on OpenVMS I64. DQDRIVER (and any pieces of IDE I/O lurking inside IPB) didn't see a whole lot of work and testing, other than for the DVD IDE ATAPI optical paths.
On the off chance that this isn't specifically IDE ATA at fault, and it's something else that's tripping IPB, pull any other secondary controllers and unnecessary giblets that might be present here. Graphics; anything else.
Pull the IDE ATA HD, and then see if the IDE ATAPI DVD then boots.
Do expect to have to wait for your SCSI bits to arrive.

Re: zx2000 , VMS 8.3 can not install
> a copy?
I'm roughly half a world away, so there are
limits to how sure I can be of his home-made
DVD, but I believe that he made it from an
image file which I used to make a DVD which
works just fine on _my_ zx2000, but it had
crossed only the Atlantic Ocean to get to me,
and the Pacific _is_ wider.
Clearly, the firmware believes that the thing
is bootable, so it can't be entirely mangled,
and "DQ - Medium Not Ready" doesn't sound (to
me) very much like a fundamental corruption
problem.
On the other hand, I've already run out of
ideas, but I'll bet that if someone mailed
him a copy of an actual DVD from HP, he'd be
willing to try it and report back. I'm just
guessing, though.

Re: zx2000 , VMS 8.3 can not install
On a side note.
Your web site is very helpful, thanks.
With nothing but the DVD-Rom installed.
NO PCI/AGP no HDD nothing.
Same error happens.
Robert Brooks:-
I wish it was media from HP but thats like getting warm blood from a cold stone.
Its a "copy" .dsk image burnt using cdrecord under linux. Since I have no VMS machines yet.
Steven Schweda :-
I am getting a friend with a zx2000 to try that image file on his zx2000 and see what happens. If his boots well we know its not the image.
If someone was willing to mail me a real copy I'd pay the shipping and then some.
I am pretty sure the zx2000 is ok. I've currently got Gentoo Linux running on it and HP-UX 11.23.
Thanks everyone

Re: zx2000 , VMS 8.3 can not install
This box boots HP-UX and Linux? Ok.
That you can get into the fs0: partition to read its contents means that the media is at least partially readable. This is the FAT partition and EFI path, but hasn't yet used the IPB primary bootstrap nor the OpenVMS drivers.)
Two approaches toward continuing the debugging would be known-good media, and a known-good-with-VMS box.
Is this the HP DVD drive, or something lifted from elsewhere? (CD and DVD drives can be surprisingly incompatible. I've had good experiences with the Plextor drives I've worked with over the years. And since we're debugging, try swapping for another DVD brand, whether or not it's not the drive that shipped with the box.)
Also see if:
fs0:\EFI\VMS\vms_loader.efi -flags 30000,0
gets you anywhere with any debugging output.
Rob: you're probably thinking of distro disks that have traveled through magnetic disk storage -- non-image copies -- and those can work. The MBR and MBR-GPT bootpath did work with DVD media last I checked, though they weren't supported. Getting the El Torito structures written -- if you want to go that path -- is a bit more tricky, however. And in any case, you have to deal with the differences in block sizes -- 512 versus 2048 -- which do hit the boot path when moving between disk and optical media.

Re: zx2000 , VMS 8.3 can not install
Thanks for the response.
Not sure how I can verify the DVD?
I've burnt 3 copies on DVD-r and I've lost count how many DVD-RW copies I've made.
I've tried a total of 4x dvd-rom drives
2x Pioneer, would not work at all just made the system beep like mad.
I've tried an LG(H+L Data) Multi Drive.
A H+L data DVD-Rom.
The two H+L drives work in fact I used the multi drive to install HP-UX and Gentoo.
I don't have any other brands here to try, Pioneer drives just refuse to work.
I have NO access to a working VMS machine.
A freind has a zx2000 he's going to try get VMS on his system using the same image.
The command :-
\EFI\VMS\vms_loader.efi -flags 30000,0
Gives the follwing output:-

fs0:\> \EFI\VMS\vms_loader.efi -flags 30000,0

Re: zx2000 , VMS 8.3 can not install
That'd be my guess. My home-made DVD copies
are "-R", and I'm happy as a bivalve.
If nothing else works, I suppose that we
could arrange to extract the problem disc
contents, and ship them back to me for
verification. I'd try as much else as I
could before resorting to that, however.

Re: zx2000 , VMS 8.3 can not install
Don't have any DVD+R or DVD+RW.
I might also try burn at a lot lower speed.
I can try and get a +R or something on Monday.
Steven Schweda:-
Lets leave that well alone unless we 100% need to, save us both a lot of time.
I'd also wait until I've got my SCSI card, not that I have an IDE disk plugged in but you never know
Do appreciate the effort.
I'd like to see also how my friend goes with his zx2000. Incase we've got an odd machine fault.
Thank you all,

Yes, but the drive itself also plays a key part here. And the DVD-R command set is different from the DVD+R command set. And different drives can and do have differing implementations.

Re: zx2000 , VMS 8.3 can not install
i may have an idea here on whats going on but it may not related.
I've experience almost the same problem with AlphaServer DS10 last month after made a burn copy of openvms CD.
It turn out to be the software I used (sonic-recordnow) will copy openvms original cd to 'gi' images/format.
Burned this image to blank CD and boot it in DS10 but it keeps on failing with weird messages. Unfortunately, i don't have the errors anymore.
My solutions was to copy back the original cd into iso image and copy it to blank CD. It works perfectly fine.

Re: zx2000 , VMS 8.3 can not install
Install on hold.
zx2000 blew up last night.
flashing green light no beeps
errors with"
00000055 - BMC No activ CPU 00-07:6F:04 (Rel) 00 00:08:42"
I've asked the seller to send me another one.
I am hoping that my odd DQ errors are from a faulty machine.
Thanks

Re: zx2000 , VMS 8.3 can not install
I now have an LSI 1030 SCSI card.
I've also got a HP SCSI DVD-ROM drive
My DVD-Rom is detected by the EFI
Install now hangs no more DQ errors!
i do the following :-
fso:
\efi\vms\vms_loader.efi -flags 0,7
this gets me :-
SYSBOOT>
I then type "continue"
It then gives me the below error:-

Stopping at the initial system (XDELTA) breakpoint.
See http://64.223.189.234/node/433
Why not boot like you did before
fs0:\> \EFI\VMS\vms_loader.efi -flags 30000,0

I originally tried that command
"fs0:\>
\EFI\VMS\vms_loader.efi -flags 30000,0"
Gets me the following outcome :-

Did you try it with the default flags (that
is, none) since the great hardware
revolution?

Yep. Was the first command i tried. Got all excited when i saw the VMS banner! Then it stopped..
I've also run all of the HP off line diag check's from the boot cd all passed.

That _is_ the symptom when the DVD-ROM is on
the (right-looking but) wrong cable.

A HP SCSI DVD-Rom.
I can't find any doco on if the zx2000 is picky for SCSI ID's
I've tried 512/2048 block size to.
THanks

Re: zx2000 , VMS 8.3 can not install
There are comparatively few SCSI DVD devices around, and my experience with them has been somewhat mixed. (SCSI CD and CD-R/RW drives worked OK, though.) Drives built from SCSI to IDE adapters can also have mixed results.

Re: zx2000 , VMS 8.3 can not install
All my IDE DVD Roms give me the "DQ medium not ready" error.
Also tried DVD+R and DVD-R
I think that my zx2000 is not healthy.
Although Linux,HP-UX and win2003 work fine and it passes all off line diag checks.
I don't understand why every other OS works!
Thanks
