About install TRU64 5.1A in Digital Server 3300

Dears:
I have some questions about installing TRU64 5.1A. Can I install TRU64 5.1A on Digital Server 3300. Does the TRU64 5.1A support Digital Server 3300 hardware?
Thanks.

Re: About install TRU64 5.1A in Digital Server 3300

Please read the release notes and technical handbook delivered with the distribution! Turbo Channel is not supported anymore!

Why not reading the docu included with the distribution answering the question as fast as possible?

Re: About install TRU64 5.1A in Digital Server 3300

I beleive there is a misunderstanding:
A 'Digital Server 3300' is not the same as a 'DEC 3000-300'. While the first one is indeed a turbochannel-based system the latter one is a Windows NT-only box, based on the (I beleive AlphaServer 800).

'Digital Servers' were painted 'frost white' and their Alpha CPUs had their ID numbers mangled to establish a Windows NT lock-in. For example the OpenVMS operating system did not boot on them, because it could not find the CPU-specific OS module.

I don't know how Tru64 Unix handles this.

Re: About install TRU64 5.1A in Digital Server 3300

Thanks everybody.
I know I must read release notes and handbook first before asking question. But I can't find any information about this.
I am a rookie about Alpha system and TRU64.
Thanks Uwe again.
I know what's wrong.
Digidtal server 3300 and Alpha server 800 use the same BIOS, so I think Digital server 3300 may install TRU64. But I can't boot TRU64 CDROM it say "Unknown CPU". That's like Uwe said.
Maybe I should give up install TRU64.

Thanks all answer my question.

Re: About install TRU64 5.1A in Digital Server 3300

The 3300 is not listed within the compatibility list of Tru64....

Maybe this is the difference between real computer and PC world:
Normally it is important that the OS is supported and compatible with the used hardware, checking all components (inkl. software) for certification and to minimize downtime and problem solving time. If it will run but is not supported will give you no chance to get support from the vendor.

A plug & play is not a good starter and is a PC like behaviour.....

Re: About install TRU64 5.1A in Digital Server 3300

Yes, I agree!

Digital Server 3300 supports only Win NT or Linux/FreeBSD etc. It does not support Tru64 or VMS!
