Re: ARP illegal address

ARP illegal address

Hi,
I don't know what this message means:
vmunix: arp: illegal IP address 255.255.255.255 is used by hardware address 00-00-1D-B0-C6-F8!

There are 15 different hardware addresses- Can someone help me?
Thanks a lot.

Re: ARP illegal address

It seems someone have activated the "multicast" option of an interface or have specified the wrong IP adress (255.255.255.255) or someone tries to worry the systems.

Check the machine with the mac-adress 00-00-1D-B0-C6-F8 (use ifconfig -a on each machine to find it).

Re: ARP illegal address

the mac prefix 00-00-1D is assigned to CABLETRON SYSTEMS, INC.

So a router or gateway must be the machine producing problems. Maybe misconfiguration is the cause.
