license terms - are Tru64 licenses transferable?

Hi all,

almost half a year ago I aquired a dual AlphaServer800 system, and now I finally got around to playing around with it.
It came with Tru64 4.08 installed from the previous owner. As it appeared to me, the disks hadn't been properly wiped out, so I zapped them by installing 5.1B. During that I also wiped out the installed licenses. :)

I did better with the second system and issued the licenses from license manager, and saved them to another system.
After installing 5.1B I reapplied them without problems.

But I'm still not completely sure, if those licenses are 'mine' now, or if I have to call HP to have them change contact details or such. (which I'll have to do anyway to hopefully get the licenses of the first node :), or if maybe, they're not transferable at all.
Which would be *bad*, because I'd have to swap them for hobbyists' licenses...

(About the license wiping: I'm more used to HP-UX & Co which at least come with a base license, and I was to keen on seeing it running to give it enough afterthought. But I guess it at least made for a good laugh?)

Anyway, I'd be thankful for any insights!

Florian,

it depend if the licenses are registered to a specific company or not. If you got the machine with the licenses it would be ok (in this case you must own a certificate).

Re: license terms - are Tru64 licenses transferable?

Hmmm.
I just got the systems, no paperwork included.
I'll try to check with HP what exact terms were issued with that license. (just hoping it was bound to the nodes :)

thanks for the information!

Re: license terms - are Tru64 licenses transferable?

Hi,

since licenses usually are not bound to a machine, you need proof, that those licenses were transferred too, as Ralf said. I just want to add, that not all licenses work for 4.0X and 5.X. This is for example the case with the cluster license.

greetings,

Florian,

I didn't see your post only after I posted mine!! I couldn't believe what I saw. LOL :-)

Re: license terms - are Tru64 licenses transferable?

Michael: It has helped me a bit further anyway.
Though I got this feeling, something like 'I just shouldn't have asked'...

Probably I'll end up with the hobbyist license, or just stick with good'ol'freebsd in case I want to turn the alpha into something more productive.

oh, btw:

Has anyone come such a systems way yet?

I've got a model number from the frame, but never found nay reference to it on google etc.

I'd just like to give thing a name :)

try the "show config" command on the srm console to get the configuration and machine type or use "dia" or "uerf" to have a look to the model details.

show config: been there, done that :)
each says AlphaServer800...
I'll look around on the systems later today.

thanks!

Re: license terms - are Tru64 licenses transferable?

Florian, the cpu speed and EV level of the cpu's are important to identify the systems properly.

Just for the documents :)

The systems is an Alcatel OEM products called USBS or Unix System Billing Station;
currently they don't seem to be available anymore, I guess they're migrating off Tru64. :/

Last before that they based them on two ES40 if I remember correctly.
