Printing to a network printer

Hi,

I've searched around the system and google, but have a bit problem in locating the right information about how to setup print queue that printing to a network printer from Tru64 5.1B-4 system.

I have inserted the following line in the /etc/printcap file

NHOMFP01|lp119|nhomfp01:\
:lf=/usr/adm/lp119err:\
:lp=:\
:rm=nhomfp01:\
:rp=nhomfp01:\
:sd=/usr/spool/lpd119:
NHOMFP03|lp142|nhomfp03:\
:lf=/usr/adm/lp142err:\
:lp=:\
:rm=nhomfp03:\
:rp=nhomfp03:\
:sd=/usr/spool/lpd142:

The nhomfp03 is a network printer we want to print to from this system. The lp142 is an arbitrary name I created for this printer. do I have to follow some specific rule to create this printer name (lp142)?

Hi,

I tried the following lpr commandline,
lpr -Pnhomfp03 /etc/printcap

it sends the printcap file to the printer, but the output is is not indented properly and it only prints few lines on the page:

abc|lp0:\
:lf=/usr/adm/lperr:\
:lp=:\

Can anyone please tell me what is wrong with my printing command/configuration and how to fix this error?

hi,

Let me elaborate more about the problem.
When the 5.1B-4 system sends a print job to the Lexmark laser printer, the printer prints it in "stair stepping" form:
eg.

LINE 1
LINE 2
LINE 3.
I am sending a text file to the printer with lpr command:
lpr -Plp142 /etc/printcap

First, tell us what is your printer type.
Does it have HP Jet direct?
Did you setup these printers using lprsetup?

hi, thanks for the reply.
This is a LEXMARK network laser printer. I am not sure what type of print it is.
We only knows its hostname and IP. I didn't use lprsetup to configure the printer.

I would try Lexmark 4039 first.

Sorry, I made a typo.
I meant I would try T610 first. Then with T612, T614 and T616.
Download drivers from link above and install them.
You have 90% chance that your printer would work with one of these drivers.

Hi,

This printer is a network printer, it is in the same subnet as the Tru64 51B-4 is connected. Do I still need to install the Txxx driver in this Tru64? it doesn't physically connected to this network printer.

HI,

I just have a look thru the website you shown here. Tru64 5.1 had already built-in LEXMARK 4039 plus driver in the base system. Can I just copy this portion of your printcap script into my printcap script?

Why do I need to have a port_9110 in the printcap file?

I am setting up a printing client (the Tru64). The Tru64 server is then use lpr sends print job to the LEXMARK 4903 printer.

My printcap entry was just an example.
From your post I was not sure which printer you have, T634 or 4903
If you have driver for your printer built-in, fine.
You do not need port_9100 if your printer does not have JetDirect. That was just an example.

Looks like your ":lp=@nhomfp03:\" entry is not correct.
Since allmost all new printers support printing to JetDirect port (tcp port 9100), I recomend to use it rather than LPD.
Do the following:
- first check is tcp port 9100 opened:
# telnet nhomfp03 9100 (nhomfp03 should be ip address of your printer)
- add following line to /etc/services:
port_9100 9100/tcp #jetdirect print port
- modify lp entry to be:
:lp=@nhomfp03/port_9100:\
- restart printer:
# lpc restart lp142
