To change a userâ s password in the NIS passwd map, use the yppasswd
command. If you receive an error message, ask the system administrator
on the master server to verify that the rpc.yppasswdd daemon on the
NIS master server is running.

Changing it using yppasswd requires the old password. But using dxaccounts allows you to change it without the old password.
