Tru64 install on Alpha 4100

As I am embarking on my first tru64 install I am in need of some good info on how to do the install and the rough time taken to do one. If anyone is willing to help I would really appreciate it.
Many Thanks

Re: Tru64 install on Alpha 4100

Stick in CD, boot, half-dozen answers, select all if you don't know. Done in an hour. Then load extra CD's.

You would be ready now if you just tried it instead of asking :-) :-) :-)

Hints
- Give it one shot without reading any doc.
- read readme's and releasenotes if it fails.
- read installation guide if it still fails.
- report SPECIFIC problem here (or call support) if it still fails.

but the important is missing: check if your version of tru64 supports the hardware (including cards).

Re: Tru64 install on Alpha 4100

Roger,

I'll try not to repeat things already mentioned in previous replys...

Before starting the install:

Update the system with the latest firmware! Get the latest AlphaServer FW CD put it in the system, sho dev to find out the device name for the CD-ROM drive and boot to it.

set bootdef_dev "" (so it does not look for old HW configuration files during install)

set boot_osflags A (multiuser mode)
set os_type UNIX
set auto_action halt <=== or whatever you want it to (reboot, etc.)
set ewa0_mode Auto_Negotiate <=== or FastFD, etc.

If not sure for the available options that a console (SRM) command provides try something like this:

set ewa0_mode ?

It will complain and list all valid options.

========================================

During install:

select all subsets
all options in the kernel
default file system layout
AdvFS for all file systems

Re: Tru64 install on Alpha 4100

Ross,

why not first checking the supported options and hardware-/softwarereleases. Maybe this will solve the problem if the hardware is still not supported by newer software or some of the devices will fail due to unsupported state?
