DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
Hi,
we have upgraded to ESXi 5.0 on 10 blades and on 6 DL 580 G5 and have installed the HP ESXi offline bundles. After the upgrade each DL 580 G5 box shows 32 memory warnings (status unknown). There were no errors with ESXi 4.1.
We have tried the original VMware ISO + HP offline bundles and also the HP provided ISO, both with the same result.
Has anyone experienced the same problem? What can I do?
Thanks for help,
Christopher

Re: DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
Hi,
I wonder if the problem is with the System Management Homepage (SMH) i.e which is there in HP offline bundle and HP ESXi 5.0 image. If you can reinstall any of the server with vmware image without offline bundle and check what the status it shows, before that please check if the server is upto date on the firmware's if not update the same.
Thanks,

Re: DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
Hi,
with ESXi there is no System Management Homepage (SMH), so there is no other place I could check the status of the memory modules. Well, not quite: Interestingly, we use Icinga to monitor our hardware, and the used plugin check_esxi_hardware.py does not show any errors.
The firmware is up to date, I did this right before installing ESXi 5.0.

Re: DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
Hi,
if you have the ILO configured i would start there to check HW status and of course the IML log,
if you have there some entries clear all of them.
If you have the HP management agent installed, ( if you are using ESXi HP branded it should be automatically installed )

Re: DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
Hi,
I have already checked the IML and the HW state in iLO - everything is fine! We experience the problem on six machines, so it must be a software issue. The question is whether it is an HP problem or a VMware problem.
On ESXi there are no real "management agents" as there were on ESX. With ESX there was the system management homepage (SMH) and the management agents which could be contacted byb SNMP. On ESX there are only CIM providers, so there is no SMH and no SNMP. It does not make a difference if we use the VMware ISO and the HP offline bundles or directly the HP ISO.
A search revealed at least two other people experiencing this problem on DL 580 G5:

Re: DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
Hi,
i spoke with my friend, and he told me that proliants have some spacial counting on the memory,
so if ths counter is not cleared with the smartstart CD, som special procedure,
the error should ocupied which you are recieving from the ESXi servers,
if some technikan replaced the memmory he should reset the counter.

Re: DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
Hi,
I have checked the memory with the HP SmartStart DVD, as expected no errors. There were no errors with ESXi 4.1, so why should there after installing ESX 5? And the exactly the same errors on six different machines?
No, there must be something wrong with either the HP offline bundle which collects the data from the machine or with ESX 5 which then interprets this data.
I have opened up a case with VMware, we will see if they can find any reason.

Re: DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
Hi,
VMware sent me back to HP. They said, that VMware just displays the data they get from the HP cim provider. If there are wrong error messages displayed, these errors must come from the HP cim provider.
What can we do now? I do not have any HP carepack on these rather old boxes to open a case at HP. Is there any other way I can have this confirmed (and perhaps repaired) by an HP engineer?
Thanks,
Christopher

Re: DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
We have the same issue. We just got started with ESXi 5.0 and sure enough, every HP DL580 G5 we've upgraded has this problem. So far the only other model we've upgraded is the 580 G4, which is unsupported, but it doesn't toss any memory errors. Not a good test. We may grab a DL380 G5/G6 we have in our lab and try it real quick.
As for getting it fixed, I'm working with VMware and others and will likely open a ticket with HP as well. I'll keep this thread posted. But, if anyone from HP is on here, please feel free to help us.

hello,
maybe irrelevant question, but you you tried to reset sensors in hw monitoring gui? I saw the issue with disk controllers which needs to have sensors reseted when rebuild was finished. just fondering... :)

Re: DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
We had this issue with a DL580 G5. Its a pity, but we just have to ignore the alarm. HP refuses to help as it is out of support but it quite clearly isn't a hardware problem. I installed Windows with SMH and everything tests good. Using the SmartStart diagnostics everything tests good. NVRAM cleared - Everything good. Boot to ESXi with the CIM providers.... 'UNKNOWN' warning for every dimm slot.

Re: DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
Just a quick update (though not very useful). Since the creation of this thread, VMware has released ESXi 5.0 U1 and HP has already released a new CIM provider bundle (version 1.1.2-4). I've applied this CIM bundle to a freshly installed ESXi 5.0 U1 (from VMware's image) and the memory warning bug still exists.

Re: DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
For those that still care, I've been told via my open case with HP that a code fix for this is supposedly in place. It is undergoing internal testing right now with a completion date set for around 13-Apr. It is not clear to me if it will then be publicly released or if I'm going to be asked to test it as well. In either case, hopefully a public fix is near.

Re: DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
I am also having this issue, and it's holding up our rollout of ESXi as well since we primarily have 580 G5 servers.
Today's adventure was finding that Update Manager can not download patches using the source http://vibsdepot.hp.com/index.xml because basically one of the relativepaths in the XML is broken somewhere for one of the ILO files... so in order to avoid 404 errors and actually have it work, I had to add four sources, one for each bundle.
So yes, please let us all know how to get updated copies of the CIM providers for this once available.

I can confirm the path problem with the HP vibsdepot, I get the same problem. Would be good to know that someone from HP is caring about it.

Re: DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
I can confirm the issue with the root folder of the vibsdepot too. I was all excited to learn of the depot, only to have my excitement squashed immediately. But I'll live with multiple VIB sources for now before I fight that battle. Tomorrow is the supposed day for new CIM providers...crossing fingers.

Re: DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
Yes, the root folder of the VIBS Depot is a huge bummer - I went as far as digging into the various XML files, and what looks to be the problem is that in 3 of the 4 bundles, they did not include the correct RelativePath information, so when VUM tries to download, it tries:
http://vibsdepot.hp.com/char-hpilo-500.9.0.0.9-1OEM.500.0.0.434156.x86_64.vib as opposed to the correct:
Please post if you do get a CIM update - I will be looking to pounce on it immediately.
Stuff like this really makes me wonder how G5s were tested, since the minute you install the HP image of ESXi5 and add the host to vCenter, it lights up with alarms from this... it gives me reservations on how extensively the rest of the system testing for these upgraded ESX versions were tested.

Re: DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
I do have an update now. I received the following URL for the updated CIM providers for ESXi 5.x on 25-Apr but it took me a couple of days to get word from HP as to whether or not these were an official, production ready version or some pre-production release for me to test. They eventually told me the engineers said these are indeed production ready. The reason I asked that is because they are still not yet published on HP's web site at the normal places (server downloads page, vibsdepot.hp.com, etc.). However, the URL does match up with the FTP site they normally use for the server downloads page, so it seems as official as we can get until they decide to publish them. What is not clear to me is whether or not they are going to publish this specific version or are working on other bug fixes to publish a newer version in the coming days/weeks.
Regardless, with all those caveats, if you are willing to use them, the URL for the offline bundle is:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib2/software1/pubsw-windows/p2144920481/v76469/
I can confirm that they fixed the memory bug for my DL580 G5 servers.

Re: DL 580 G5 with ESXi 5.0 show Memory warnings
Allen,
Thanks for working through this - I have downloaded the bundle and tested it, and have verified this corrects our issue as well.
Now hopefully all that's left is for them to fix the references in the updates for the vibsdepot.
