HPE Oneview and vSphere VLCM

Hey everyone,

We got a small vmware cluster, it's just 3 nodes at version 7 and vCenter version 8.

I am very new to hpe oneview and vlcm in general, but i managed to install and configure the oneview and ov4vc appliances.

note: I did not set any server profiles in oneview.

I can now see the OneView plugin administration page in vCenter but the "HPE OneView Service Pack Management" section is basically empty

What are the steps to enable this ?

first line says: Online Software Depot has to be registered with vLCM (by clicking on "Register" button) for each package to be visible and usable for compliance checking and remediation.

there is not a register button, what i can do is add a new repo url to patch configuration, but honestly i am not sure this is the right thing to do.

Should i upload an spp package bundle to oneview first?

By the way, i want to avoid creating a server template or profile in OneView that once applied immediately installs the firmare updates, i want vLCM to do that.

I am bit lost here, can somebody point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Re: HPE Oneview and vSphere VLCM

To enable the "HPE OneView Service Pack Management" section and get it working correctly with vLCM in your vCenter environment, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Register the Online Software Depot with vLCM:

    • In the vCenter interface, navigate to the HPE OneView plugin administration page.
    • Although you mentioned there's no "Register" button, you should look for an option to add a new repository or register the Online Software Depot. This might be under a different label, like "Add Repository URL" or "Patch Configuration."
    • Add the URL for the HPE Online Software Depot. This URL can typically be found in the HPE OneView documentation or the HPE support site. It usually looks something like https://depot.hpe.com/platform-releases/ov/depot.
  2. Configure the Repository URL:

    • Enter the repository URL into the appropriate field and save the configuration.
    • This step ensures that vLCM can access the necessary firmware and driver updates from HPE.
  3. Synchronize the Repository:

    • Once the repository URL is added, you may need to manually trigger a synchronization process to ensure vLCM downloads the latest packages.
    • Look for an option like "Synchronize" or "Update Repository" in the plugin interface.
  4. Avoid Immediate Firmware Updates via OneView Profiles:

    • Since you don't want to create a server profile in OneView that immediately installs firmware updates, you should ensure that your server profiles (if any) are not set to automatically update firmware upon creation.
    • You can do this by customizing the server profile template settings in OneView to exclude automatic firmware updates or by not applying firmware baselines to the templates.
  5. Use vLCM for Compliance Checking and Remediation:

    • With the Online Software Depot registered and synchronized, you can now use vLCM to perform compliance checks and remediation.
    • Navigate to the vLCM section in vCenter, and you should be able to see the available firmware and driver updates provided by HPE OneView.
    • From here, you can create a baseline and apply it to your VMware cluster to ensure compliance and update firmware as needed.

By following these steps, you should be able to get the "HPE OneView Service Pack Management" section populated and operational, allowing vLCM to handle firmware updates without immediately applying them via OneView server profiles. If you encounter specific issues or error messages during these steps, referring to the HPE OneView and vLCM documentation or create a case with HPE support might provide additional guidance.
