What role does boot luns for ESXi play in booting up VM's?

What role does boot luns for ESXi play in booting up VM's?

I am new to VMWare.

 

If a iSCSI boot lun is deinfed for booting ESXi host purpose only, then does this lun has anything to do to VM's, or played any roles in booting up VM's?
