9350i cd-writer dirapi.dll page fault

New out of the box cd-writer and software on disk 1. I can't even "start" the software to use the drive. All I get is HP cd-writer caused an invalid page fault in module dirapi.dll ...

re-installed windows 98
re-installed the HP software

no luck and same result

I am getting exactly the same error and cannot rectify this fault.

Have you managed to fix this and if so what is the solution?

To fix this problem
Uninstall the HP CD-Writer software completly,
remove any macromedia (flash & shockwave) plug-ins at
Control Panel --> Internet Options --> General --> Tempory Internet Files --> Settings --> Vieuw Objects.

Reboot.

Install the macromedia Flash & Shockwave plugins from the macromedia website.

Install the HP CD-Writer software again.

Reboot.

After that it will work.
