CD-R won't see discs
I have a problem with my CD-R 8200i. It will not recognise any CDs put into the drive. I have experimented with commercial data CDs, CD-R burned at home (and working in other CDROM drives) and blank CD-Rs. On all occasions the right-hand LED on the front of the drive blinks several times and then goes off and stays off.
The drive is listed as "working properly" in Device Manager, and shows up with no problems listed in Sandra. In Explorer, the drive shows in the directory tree, but all attempts to get the contents of a data CD give the error message "the device is not ready".
I have used the CD-R/RW Diagnostics utility. The "Select Device" option gives:
HP CD-Writer+ 8200 (1,1,0)
(Host Adapter, SCSI ID, LUN)
Xcd DLL version - 2.1.017
The "Device Information" gives a full sheet of information, including listing the Firmware as 1.0f.
Disk Information simply says:
There is no disc in the current CD-R/RW
This message comes up regardless of which disk is in the tray.
When I try to run the Drive Self-Tests I get the following error message:
6390 - Error 04 on ASPI Request
Host Adapter status is 00
SCSI status in 02
Sense Key is 02
Additional Sense Code is 04
When I dismiss that error message I get another one which reads
6310 - SCSI Send Diagnostic Failed. Cycle the power on your computer and try again.
Re-booting the machine does not help.
I have just had to clean up my computer after an extensive Klez infestation, so I suspect that there might be a software problem.
I have tried re-installing the device (which was correctly recognised by Windows 98SE)
I have used an aspicheck program which says that aspi is properly installed. I have checked the dlls and all are in the windows\system directory, are not of zero size and are the same version (4.57)

Re: CD-R won't see discs
HP support suggested that I disable DMA transfer on the CD-R, which I tried and it didn't help. Last ditch recommendation was to switch the drive to the master drive on the IDE channel. This too didn't help.
I contacted a friend with experience who said both ideas might have worked, but, in his experience, the answer was usually that the read/write head on the drive had packed in. If the drive isn't still in warrenty, then you go and buy a new one.
This is going to be my soluction, although the drive has not been heavily used (or abused). The new one is unlikely to be an HP.

Re: CD-R won't see discs
My girlfrend got this same type of CD-R (9100c) from her mother. It was broken, it did not read eny cd's ( There is no disc in the current CD-R/RW ). O'h jeh browken ! :o)
After a while surfing the net and reading all this BS here at HP Forum, I started wondering why don't they help US ??? Ok, had to put my mind on this !
And now I't works !!!
I opend the CD rom, OK the Warenty lable was dirtroyed, like so what ! The player diden't work anyway ! The first thin that cauth my eye, the sledge that moves the laser was stuck ! it diden't move at all, then I saw that the wheel that moves the slege was not at it's own place, it had jumped like out of it's place. So just alitle push with my finger, it was fixed.
so no wonder it diden't read eny cd's , the laser never retched to the CD it was stuck.
