cd writer 8100i

I have a 6545C system which came with that cd writer and win98. After installing win2k, my system seemed to be working fine until i installed a second hard drive which made my cd writer undetected. Furthermore I don't believe it even powers on, it doesn't eject or anything so for a while now I've just been without a cd rom...
I'm wondering because I really don't think my cd writer is broken. Is there a way to get my cd writer back so that i can at least read cd's and so i can reformat my hard drive? Or simply can i just format my hard drive, install drivers for my cd writer?, and then restore from the recover cd. I think the product page says that you have to install the drivers before upgrading to win2k.

If your cd-writer isn't opening at all, it sounds like there is no power goig to the unit. See if all your wires are pluged in where they should be (i.e ide cable)

Again, another suggestion. Another thought, maybe your powersupply is too small, i think the Pavilion 6000 series have a puny power supply in them.
