cd writer 8200 external

I have the above drive and it wored fine on windows 98 and ME, now I've moved to XP and I cannot get it to work in a stable fashion. It crashes during the process and XP thinks its a 8290 model. My model is 8220e or 8230e (they are the same I believe save for the freebie software packaging included).

With the new HP xp drivers I've continued to have persistent failures and I've tried running Nero, Easy CD, Direct Cd etc, they all seem to be unable to make a satisfactory burn, crashes are common.

1, How to I uninstall the cd writer completely (ie remove all old drivers)
2. reinstall to make it work
3. what software should |I use to burn CD's (windows xp inbuilt product or someone elses)

Do HP intend to provide better drivers as I've seen many messages suggesting these drivers do not work properly.

thanks

Re: cd writer 8200 external

I am trying to get an 8220e to work on XP for my brother. His drive does nothing on XP, can't even read a CD. If you attempt to read a CD then it can't even eject without powering off then on. I would also like to know how to remove everything (uninstalling the device doesn't work).

Re: cd writer 8200 external

Can I bump this message, as I too have a problem with the same CD-R, but working with Windows98. As its button is now jammed and it is under warranty, HP are replacing it, but I need to delete all the old software, altho they are not sending me any new discs...but I would still like to start from scratch.
Is it plugged in?

Re: cd writer 8200 external

P Ryan,

Could you please tell me what software you were using with your burner while running win 98? I have the same burner, running under windows 98 and I'm having nothing but problems. I'm hoping its just the software, although I've tried 4 or 5 different programs. Thanks.

I was running Adaptec, (software that came with the CD-R).
Is it plugged in?

Re: cd writer 8200 external

I am having the same problems with this model CD writer. I had no problems on my other computer running Windows 98. I was using the MyCD software that came with the burner. Now I have bought I new HP Pavilion and am having nothing but problems. When I try to burn a CD under XP the write test always fails and it says "There was a problem writing to the CD". Then, when I retry burning the CD with a different disk, it tells me my CD writer does not support this operation. I have tried downloading the USB drivers off the HP website, but I can't even install them. Windows tells me I'm already using the best driver for my hardware. What is going on here and how do I fix this? I basically have a $180 paperweight now instead of a CD burner.

Re: cd writer 8200 external

hi there...
I don't know if this will work for all of you, but hopefully it could help.
I was having the same problem. I have win. 98 on a toshiba laptop, using the cd writer 8220e. I would get an error message at different times saying that it was unable to write to disk.
What worked for me was turning all programs off except windows explorer and the cd burner software, meaning go ctrl-alt-del and close all programs except "explorer" and "HP Record Now" or whatever software you use. (You may also want to turn off the screensaver). On top of this you'll want to lower the burning speed. While this is not the greatest solution, it's better than nothing at all. I lowered mine to 2times.
I hope this helps!?

Re: cd writer 8200 external

In many cases these problems would have been caused by attempts to load bundled software from Roxio (=Adaptec) onto another OS.

If this software came with Win98, don't try to load it onto Win2k; if it came with Win2k, don't try to load it onto WinXP.

For example if you insert the CD for Win2k into a WinXP machine, it will say there are incompatibility issues and please cancel. So you cancel, but by then the damage is done: you may not see the CD drive at all anymore (or other problems).

If you definitely want to use Roxio software under WinXP, build a machine with Win2k Pro, load the CD burner software, then upgrade the machine to WinXP Pro. Any other way will likely wreck the setup of the machine and you may have to rebuild the machine from scratch to get your CD drive visible again.

Best solution is to for ever avoid any products that have Roxio or Adaptec CD burning software bundled.

As they appear to have crippling mechanisms built in that must prevent people to use the software with the next OS. But at the same time these mechanisms cripple the OS.

If you have serious problems, rebuild the machine from scratch than load Nero, and it will work well under XP (www.nero.com, get the free 30day trial, if it works you can buy it). Or any other software as long as it is not made by Roxio/Adaptec. Some brands of CD burner bundle Veritas or Nero with the drives, they are better choices.

if you throw it in the trash can and it don't jump back out, you know its broken
