CD writer created a CDROM with all files in read only mode

I had a virus on my PC which changed the file permissions on all the files as they were written to the CD. now I can see the files but am unable to open them or copy them. I there any software or tools available which will take an image of the CD and write it to either disk or CDRW so that the file permissions can have the read only attribute removed.

These files are the pictures of my wedding and honeymoon if I dont resolve this the wife will be filing for divorce. please HELP.

Re: CD writer created a CDROM with all files in read only mode

you should be able to do a cd data copy, but the biggest issue is, is the virus on the CD?? Be careful not to reintorduce the virus back to your PC. I really think you might consider taking the CD to a professional to have them copy the CD. Hopefully no divorice results from this!

Re: CD writer created a CDROM with all files in read only mode

The CD is virus free. When I first discovered the problem I down loaded the latest Symantec anti virus and this cured it and said the CD was clean.

I am unable to do a data copy as the files are in read only mode.

Re: CD writer created a CDROM with all files in read only mode

Hello,

The CD is a read-only device as far as I know. You can read from it to another storage system (e.g. disk) if it is in read-only mode. As far as I know, all files in CDs are read-only by default.

Re: CD writer created a CDROM with all files in read only mode

The CD is a write once then read only device unless you are using CD/RW's.

All the files will be written to it as read only.

You can copy them back to your hard drive and then change their attributes if needed.

Re: CD writer created a CDROM with all files in read only mode

I generally assign points when I am finished then I can give a fair handout to each person for there contibution.

Now as I said in my description of the problem I am unable to copy the files from the CD to the hard disk.

I am opening windows explorer changing directory to the D drive. I click on one of the files which is photo1.jpg .Explorer says it si file photo1 type JPG image modification date and size , attributes: read-only

when I try to copy to the hard disk I get a window open titles "error copyinf file or folder" with message " cannot copy PHOTO1: error performing inpage operation"

Re: CD writer created a CDROM with all files in read only mode

Which OS are you using? If you can, try to view the cd in MS-DOS. I had problem with one cd, windows couldn't copy the files and I did it through MS-DOS and it worked...

Re: CD writer created a CDROM with all files in read only mode

Hi Milla

I tried DOS mode and had no joy there. The bottom line is the file permissions have NO READ permission and as the CD is not changeable I am unable to use the attrib command to alter this. I can not copy the files as the permissions wont let me read the file. This was real bad luck being my wedding and honeymoon photo's.

thanks for the help
John.

Re: CD writer created a CDROM with all files in read only mode

This is exactly what happened to me this week - also after getting a virus on my computer. As with John, I made sure the virus was not on the CD files. Same exact situation here - I can't copy files, even to the desktop - everything is marked "read only". Unfortunately I had to put a new hard drive in my computer, so if I can't these files to load I have lost all my work from the last 3 years. Did anyone ever solve this?

Re: CD writer created a CDROM with all files in read only mode

Try a disk-copy (track-by-track copy) of the CD to another cd - this time a CD-RW disk. You should be able to change the attribs of the files then.

Good luck!

Re: CD writer created a CDROM with all files in read only mode

John,
Are you sure these files are actually on this CD-R? I've had an issue where the data was corrupt on the CD-R and I couldn't access the data, however it still claimed the correct amount of space on the CD-R. The only reason I mention this is because of the virus you had mentioned in your post. Try doing a Disk Clone (using any CD-R program) to a CD-R or a CD-RW. Either one I hope this helps Good luck. Also what was the name of the virus?

Re: CD writer created a CDROM with all files in read only mode

Hmm,

although this seems to be an old thread, there was no solution yet ???

How about this try :
- create a logical volume of 800MB on HP-UX
- insert the CD to HP-UX
- do a dd from the raw-device of the CD to the newly created logical volume raw-device
- mount the raw-device with filetype CDFS, but in rw-mode.
- adjust the permissions
- press thumbs and copy

no idea if this helps. I hope you did find a backup somewhere to avoid the threat you mentioned.

Good luck

Re: CD writer created a CDROM with all files in read only mode

When you go into "My Computer", can you drill down and see the files on the CD? Have you tried a copy/paste of the files?

I am sorry, you are out of luck. ( I also have a toast like this and it has 2yrs. worth of code - all lost).
From Microsoft >>>>
Common Cause of "Error Performing Inpage Operation" Explained
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
Microsoft BackOffice Server 4.0
Microsoft Windows NT Server4.0, Terminal Server Edition
Microsoft Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition 4.0
Microsoft Windows NT Server 3.1, 3.5, 3.51, 4.0
Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 3.1, 3.5, 3.51, 4.0
Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server

Summary
When copying files from a diskette on a Windows computer, you may occasionally experience an "Error performing inpage operation".

In this scenario, this error usually indicates physical problems on the diskette media, and is probably unrelated to paging operations involving the Windows paging file, despite the wording of the error message.
More Information
Copy utilities commonly use the CopyFile() Win32 API to copy files.

For small files (where small is arbitrarily defined in the Windows source code as less than 256 kilobytes) the Windows CopyFile() API does not actually open the source file and read from it using the CreateFile() and ReadFile() APIs as might be expected.

Instead, the CopyFile() API creates a File Mapping and maps the file into virtual memory. Data is then read from the file by simply accessing this memory. As the memory is accessed, the required portions of the file are paged into memory on demand. This leverages the paging functionality of the Windows Virtual Memory Manager, but introduces the jargon of Paging into this particular file copy scenario.

Consequently, if I/O errors occur while processing a CopyFile() API for a "small" file, they will not be reported as File I/O Errors. Instead, as these errors are detected in what is effectively a paging operation (albeit unrelated to the Windows paging file), they will be reported as "Error performing inpage operation".

Additionally, errors caused by network connectivity can cause these errors. Mismatched MTU sizes or truncation of a packet at a router can result in this error when files larger than the largest packet size are copied over the network. In essence, the network connection is the media that has the physical problem.
