floppy drive

I have a new HP home pc. When I attempt to use a 3 1/2 floppy...there is a message that says the disk is not formatted. However I buy formatted disks, and when I try to allow the computer to format it anyhow, it says the disk can not be formatted. What is the problem here?

What OS are you running?

Are the diskettes "write-enabled" ?

What is the capacity of the diskettes?

Have you called the store you bought it from?
