hp cd-writer 8230e on Windows XP

I have a this cd writer and after installing XP, the system allows the old drivers but when is creating a CD it stops after ten minutes.
Then the burned CD becomes unusable and it is necesary to restart the cd-writer to eject the CD.

Anyone has this CD writer working with XP?

Re: hp cd-writer 8230e on Windows XP

What recording software are you using? The software supplied with the Writer is not XP capatible, have you tried any other software?

Re: hp cd-writer 8230e on Windows XP

I have tried on two ways:
- Using Windows XP CD recording capabilities.
- Using HP RecordNow.

On both I experienced the same problems, it is detected but it doesn't write the CD correctly.

I am experiencing EXACTLY the same problems unfortunately. I am considering changing back to W2K.

Hello,

You should download the drivers for Windows XP. Here is the link:

Re: hp cd-writer 8230e on Windows XP

I downloaded and installed the posted XP driver after uninstalling the old drivers and HP software and I still get an error message on start up saying the CD-R software is incompatible and will cause system instability and is being shut down. The drive is visible under My Computer but is not accessible. When I look at the driver properties of the 8230e I note that the driver file "c:\WINNT\System32\drivers\Cdralw2k.sys" (Adaptec 1.001034) is disabled because it can cause my computer to become unstable. What is the fix for this?

Re: hp cd-writer 8230e on Windows XP

The good news are that after installing the XP driver that Vincent indicates, I were able to create a CD with HP RecordNow.

But the bad news are that now XP doesn't recognize the cd-writer it looks only a CD drive.
With the old W2K driver it appears like a cd writer but doesn't work.

If someone knows how to fix it, please let me know.
Thanks

Re: hp cd-writer 8230e on Windows XP

I am getting sick of this. I have had my burner less than 1 year. If HP cannot support their products better than this, we should let everyone know not to buy their products.

Does anyone know if there is a way for me to get my moeny back. We really should file a class action lawsuit.

Any updates on this? I've also had my 8230e for less than a year and have tried using the XP driver and a whole host of different cd-burning softwares. Help!
HP still hasn't made my upgrade!

Re: hp cd-writer 8230e on Windows XP

If you have a CD-Writer 8200e series with windows XP, and are unable to use the drive, the problem may lie with a past installation of Adaptec Direct CD/Easy CD Creator.

Easy CD Creator's unistaller leaves behind several files which still cause problems. Specifically, when the Adaptec software is uninstalled the registry is not reverted to use the Windows "cdrom.sys". You have to edit the registry to stop the Adaptec driver after uninstall.

THE FIX:

1. The critical keys that the software leaves behind after being uninstalled are in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SyStem\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-0 87002BE10318}

In this section you will find two keys alled "UpperFilters" & "LowerFilters". Delete both of these keys and reboot to restore Windows to the default CD driver.

2. REBOOT

3. AFTER the reboot, you should also search for other keys containing "cdralw2k", "cdr4_xp" and "cdr4_2K" and delete these then delete these files from the windows\system32\DRIVERS\ directory. (personally i didn't search the registry for these extra references-- step 1 alone solved the problem.)

Hopefully this will help many avoid hours of futile attempts to reinstall the HP drivers. And someone should make HP's USELESS TECH SUPPORT aware of this problem with Adaptect/Roxio software.

Finally, I can't wait until Roxio files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, because frankly, their software and support SUCKS. They should provide a complete uninstaller for their junk on their website.

Re: hp cd-writer 8230e on Windows XP

Turn off Ultra-DMA in bios.

Turn off the "Enable Digital Audio.....". Via Device manager, select cd from list, click properties, choose the page where you also set the volume...and then uncheck the box for the setting of play digital audio....

In device manager go to the device "hard disk controllers"....find the one that the CD drive is attached to. Choose properties...if there is an option there for using DMA turn it off and set it to "PIO" or whatever.

When you restart your computer your drive should work significantly better.

I had found that if I went to the properties page and clicked "cancel" on the page the whole OS would seem to just cease responding for a long time.

After turning off the DMA setting I found the system responded immediately when I clicked the "cancel" button on the properties page of device manager for the CD-ROM properties.

I tried to go through HP tech support but their messed up way of dealing with technical support is incompetent.

I worked tech support for years and I tell you their tech support is the worst I have ever seen. In fact, they are simply entering in keywords into a database and coming up with some dumb canned answers and sending those off to you in e-mail replies. Then when you insist they get someone else to assist you they say they have done their job and the problem is now yours and to take it to a service center.

They are totally full of it and I think people should be outraged at how bad their techncial support is.

I spent a great deal of time working on this problem and I would say for certain that HP was trying to pull a fast one in getting rid of these drives.

I will also say that I will never buy another HP product in my life, period.

Re: hp cd-writer 8230e on Windows XP

I am having the same problems as above. I have the latest version of nero (v5582) and this was working fine with win2000. After installing XP, Nero failed to identify IDE's and the XP CD writing software also failed. Is this a driver problem? If I download and install the above driver, will this fix the problem?
I am not a techie and the thought of having to do some of the above solutions is quite daunting!

Re: hp cd-writer 8230e on Windows XP

I just wanted to say that I could never get the RecordNow Software to work with Windows XP. I finally went to Properties of the cd burner and enabled xp to record cd's. I then used Windows Media Player to burn an audio cd. That might be worth trying if all else has failed.

Given the pathetic tech support, I will certainly NEVER buy an HP product again.

Re: hp cd-writer 8230e on Windows XP

I fixed this by using the wnaspi32.dll from Nero 5.0.4.8. It should be attached.
