HP CD-Writer Plus 8210e

I am using Windows 98 and have one USB device attached which is an HP 8210e External R/W drive. Everything shows up under system devices as it is supposed to under Universal serial bus controller and HP USB Port driver. The 8210e Icon is showing on the task bar.

When I put any CD in the 8210e the green lite comes on and then when I click my mouse I get a series of clicks and then my computer system locks up and I have to re-boot the system.

I have been using this for CD-Writer for more than a year on this machine.

The CD in question was made with this 8210e when it was functioning and I am able to read it fine in the standard internal CD drive.

1)I have removed the device from systems.
2)Re-installed software
3)unhooked the USB and let Windows 98 find the hardware again.

To no avail.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Re: HP CD-Writer Plus 8210e

got a similar problem.
cd writer (hp 8210e) works on my machine, but only with files. if i want to create audio cd's, the writing test (or direct writing) fails.
any suggestions?
