Re: HP8230e and Nero/WinOnCD in Win2K

This was also posted to another thread on the same topic.

I've been on the phone with HP support here in Canada every day for the last week, to close in on the problem.

Yesterday, they asked me to take the problem up with Nero. After some slightly more heated discussion, they then said it should work with Adaptec (now Roxio) software. I borrowed a copy of Adaptec Easy CD Creator Platinum (which, BTW, is what the current HP installation software suggests one should upgrade to).

The result was then when using DirectCD to copy a CD, the "disc-at-once" check box was greyed out when the newer 8230 (i.e. the 8200f version) was selected. When the old (8200a) unit was selected, the checkbox was not greyed out. Similarly, with a Teac CDW24E drive the feature was available.

So, this software, unlike Nero, "knows" that the DAO function is unavailable with this unit. The HP spec for the 8230e at http://www.cdwriter.com/products/8200e/specifications.asp states that DAO is in fact support. Therefore, this unit, that of my colleague, and as I understand from this forum, several others around the world, does not conform to HP's own specification.

Furthermore, the Roxio software is clearly aware of this defect. It is suprising, therefore, that HP is not. It would be more surprise, though, given HP's reputation for service, if HP actually knows about this problem but continues to sell it under the published spec, and does not advise their support people of the existence of the problem.

QED

I'm waiting for an HP product specialist to get back to me by Friday at noon as promised. I'm asking for either a fix or a refund.

Re: HP8230e and Nero/WinOnCD in Win2K

Hi there.

I've just been haggling with HP support in Australia. They have agreed to test the drive to confirm that there is a problem (they believe there isn't).

Will let you know what happens.

Re: HP8230e and Nero/WinOnCD in Win2K

OK.

HP have tested my device AND IT BLOODY WELL WORKS for them using EZCD5 and Win2000. They tested several audio CD's using DAO without problem.

However, the support person tells me that on their PC in device manager under "CD-Rom" the writer is shown as "HP 8200...whatever".

On mine it is just "CD-Rom device".

This must be the difference but why is it happening? I have previously uninstalled the device & reinstalled using the new downloaded drivers & it made no difference. Is Win2k substituting it's own drivers somehow?

When the writer is returned I'll have another go & see what happens.

Re: HP8230e and Nero/WinOnCD in Win2K

Could anyone with Win2k & who has the correct HP name in device manager under "DVD/CD-Rom Drives" (i.e. "HP 8200...." not "DVD-ROM drive") please let me know what drivers are listed as being used by the device.

If they CDRom.sys, Redbook.sys, & storprop.dll could you please check them out in explorer & tell me their size & date please?

Thanks.

Re: HP8230e and Nero/WinOnCD in Win2K

I've same problem on xp pro, my 8230e is recognised as 8290 and Nero, direct CD, easycd etc..none of them work, if I plug into a win98 machine it works lovely.

I can't find a solution.

please advise, or in the alternative, hope do i completely wipe all trace of the device and restart?

thanks

Mike, I'm travelling for the next 3 weeks and can't check out the name of the device, but EZCD5 definitely does not work with either of the 8200f units I tried.
Perhaps HP Support is using an older 8200a unit which does work OK. Ask them where the lights are located on their unit.

HP has agreed to take my unit back.

Re: HP8230e and Nero/WinOnCD in Win2K

Chris.

HP support were actually using my machine. I mailed it to their support section. They tested it under Win2K & XP without problem using EZCD5.

On another forum someone in the UK with the same problem got a replacement machine from HP which was an earlier manufacture date & identifies as a 8200a. It worked of course.

I am wondering about the drivers because the HP support person told me that my machine on their W2k PC identifies under DVD/CDrom devices as "HP8200 ..." rather than just "CD-Rom" (which is what my pc says). But I used the original & updated HP drivers so I can't figure why it's different.

Maybe if I find the answer to this then I have a answer to the problem as well.

Hopefully I will receive the HP back today & I have found a copy of EZCD5. Will try it all again & let you know what happens. BTW - on the Roxio EZCD supported hardware site they acknowledge a problem with later HP8230e's which they say they are investigating.

Re: HP8230e and Nero/WinOnCD in Win2K

Ok - a bit more info if anyone out there is still interested.
I got hold of a copy of EZCS5 (just to make sure it would work), and guess what - It did!

I am now using EZCD & directCD5 with no problems.

HP support in Australia were looking for an older version of the 8230e but were not hopeful. So it looks like I'm stuck with EZCD until maybe there is a firmware fix, or Nero/winonCD have a compatible software version.

I am still interested in why in device manager the HP shows as a "CD-Rom Drive" when it should be denoted as "HP blah blah...".
