Greetings. My HP CD-Writer Plus 8200e worked fine with Windows 95. I upgraded to Windows Me and completed the download of:
1. New USB drivers for Windows Me, Windows 2000 and Windows 98, 3.9, 846.0 KB dated 12/08/00, and
2. Update patch for Direct CD, 503.8 KB dated 2/01/00
Having done this, I found I wasn't even able to format a CD-RW. I then reloaded the original 8200e software and drivers. I am now able to format, but when I attempt to save either text or images to a disk, I get this Insert Disk dialogue box message: "Please insert a disk into drive E:. Of course, there is already a formatted disk in this drive. Opening and closing the drive's tray doesn't correct this problem. How do I remedy this dilemma?
Also, I am using a PII 233 with 64MB of RAM. I did close all the programs running in the system tray and have rebooted any number of times.
Thanks,
Steve

Take a look at the following web page and make sure you have a Windows Me-compatible version of Direct CD. If not, you should be able to download an upgrade from the Roxio website (they are an Adaptec spinoff). Good luck!

It just occurred to me that if you are running a Pentium II motherboard, there's a pretty good chance there are BIOS and/or chipset upgrades that could affect this problem. Check out the MB or system manufacturer's website.

Roger,
Thanks for you assistance in helping me. I find I am in need of further clarification, particularly involving:
"Take a look at the following web page and make sure you have a Windows Me-compatible version of Direct CD." Where is "...the following web page..." you are referring to? I am not seeing it in your post.
Also, as I mentioned in my 6/2/'01 post, I did download the update patch for Direct CD, 503.8 KB dated 2/01/00 from the HP site. This is the patch HP includes with the Windows Me download for my CD-Writer Plus 8200e. Is this the one you are referring to? If not, I should be able to find it/another at Roxio? Is their URL www.roxio.com?
My PC is a 100% clone assembled by a business in the city where I live. So much for downloads from the system manufacturer's website? It does use an Asus P2L97 AGP Motherboard. So I may be able to download a BIOS upgrade from www.asus.com? Regarding a chipset upgrade, my PC uses an Intel 440LX AGPset. Somewhere at www.intel.com I should be able to find where to download an upgrade to this chipset? The reason I am assuming you are referring to these being download upgrades is because my PC met all the system requirements for the Windows Me upgrade I completed. Additionally, I did successfully complete the required HP download upgrades that were supposed to have rendered my CD-Writer Plus 8200e fully compatible with Windows Me.
Thanks,
Steve

Re: My HP CD-Writer Plus 8200e Worked Fine...
Sorry - the link I meant to include was http://www.roxio.com/en/support/cdrwin/cdrecos.html
You're right on about asus.com and intel.com. For Intel, use http://developer.intel.com/design/software/drivers/platform/archived_INF.htm
You'll find a long list of software with the newest at the top. I think the reason they have so many versions is that it's their developer website. I would use the newest and see where it gets me (reading the Readme, Release notes, and Manual would be advisable).
Please let me know if you have any other USB devices installed. Thanks.

Re: My HP CD-Writer Plus 8200e Worked Fine...
Roger,
I appreciate the further details you have provided. As far as any other USB devices installed, I have disconnected my Logitech QuickCam Pro (Part No. 1049-680-011) because it is not compatible with WMe and Logitech indicates there isn't a download to make it compatible. They are only offering me an appreciable discount on a newer cam.
One other area of concern I do have. Not too long ago I successfully completed a download for my modem ( oh, to have DSL!). Though the download was successful, upon restarting my PC, W95 (previous OS) ended up being trashed to the point where I was back to the DOS command line. Through considerable time, effort and help of online support I was able to regain the use of W95. I subsequently upgraded to WMe. You can understand my concern about possibly trashing WMe. Then again, I really need my CD-RW up and running, too.

Re: My HP CD-Writer Plus 8200e Worked Fine...
I was having a simular problem to yours. I have a NEC PII 266 with Win ME. My 8210e has been working with Win ME but stopped working. It would write part of a CD and then say no disk, put one in and nothing I did could make it finish. While reading the comments to your problem I realized I didn't try without any other USB device connected. I had the 8210e on one USB port and a hub with a digital camera, UMAX scanner and HP 932C printer connected on the other port. After playing around with different combinations, I found the 8210e would work as long as the HP932C printer was disconnected from the hub. Any combination that contained the printer would fail. I have no idea why. I have a Cannon printer on the parallel port.

Thanks so much for your valuable insight. I strongly suspect I am going to have to give your suggestion a try. I certainly do appreciate your taking the time to respond.
