Need help with CD-ROM

I wasn't sure which forum to post in so I just picked this one. We're having problems with our CD-ROM. When we insert a disc to install something, it says illegal operation and then it shuts down. Then when we go to play a CD w/ music, it works. So, basically...it can't read the discs that require installing something yet it reads music CDs. Anyone know how to fix this?
