Unable to read burned DVD-R disks

Using Nero OEM, I burned a number of jpg files onto an HP DVD-R 16x LightScribe disk. The burning process was successful, but when I try to open the files on the disk, no icons are displayed and the disk appears to be empty. The HP hardware is HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GSA-H31L. Reading other questions and answers on this forum leads me to believe that I should have purchased DVD+R disks, but the weird thing is that other DVD-R disks I've burned that don't have photographs on them or have mixed content (say, Word files and jpg files) read OK.
