unrecoverable read error

When I inserted an HP CD-RW into my internal HP CDWriter+ 9100, I received this message:

The disk has experienced an unrecoverable read error. This means that the data that you previously put on the disc can no longer be retrieved from the disk. It is advisable to move any critical data off the disc as soon as possible.

Well, how can I move any critical data off the disk if I can't retrieve anything ????

Windows Explorer shows no files on the disk, although I know there are hundreds. When I go to "Properties," it shows the used space and capacity at 534mb. It also says the device is locked and "Direct CD Read-only disc. This disc contains dmaged file system data which does not allow write access."

Is there any way to save any of the files from this disc?

Re: unrecoverable read error

1. Clean the disc drive and try again.
2. Try another CD-ROM drive. If it works copy the data to the hard drive. Then either move the data over the Internet to another computer or install the burner on that machine.
3. If it does not work then use your other backup disc and the partial backups you made after that. Um, you *did* make more than one copy of the data didn't you?

Re: unrecoverable read error

Download CDR Diagnostic to get the data from the disc: http://www.cdrom-prod.com/software.html

Re: unrecoverable read error

You say "Direct CD" - that's an app that allows you to use your CD as if it were a giant floppy disk, inserting and removing at will. You won't be able to access that disk except by using the original Direct CD application - standard tools won't work.

Re: unrecoverable read error

Sorry Paul what you have said is not correct, you do not need Direct CD installed to be able to access the information on a 'formatted disc'. You might need a UDFREADER installed to read the disc. The CDR Diagnostic tool was design to recover corrupted data on a CDR/CDRW that was burned by means of 'Packet Writing' (ie using the CD as a giant floppy disc).
