Windows ME and CD-Writer Plus 8110i

Well I just recently upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows ME, and what a mistake that was. In doing so Windows Me converted my cd-writer into a cd-rom drive. I contacted HP, and boy they are behind in the times, its like they just heard about this new OS. So here I sit with no Windows ME driver, and no software to go with it(Easy CD Creator does not work with ME). HP said it could be a month or two before new drivers are available. Looks like hp dropped the ball this time.

Re: Windows ME and CD-Writer Plus 8110i

There are a variety of posts both here and in usenet that basically all say the same. But my observation is that it's not just HP that is lacking drivers, it seems a lot more universal than that. My guess is that ME is a lot different than the vendors expected. Experience has shown that Microsoft products are usually not production ready until at least the first Service Pack though (often later). Maybe the vendors have had enough of this game and decided to wait for the first Service Pack themselves?

Re: Windows ME and CD-Writer Plus 8110i

Got a driver issue. The bad part about it is that HP was selling systems with ME on them before the product was officially released. The result was there was no support for the OS. (Even though they were selling it).

I fell into that trap as well. Promptly returned the system, got a no-name system, put my cd-writer in, loaded MS 2000, got the drivers, and all is well.

I found that drivers for Win2000 are more readily available than for ME.

Be careful with the networking as well. This was another screw-up that reinforced my decision to return the system with ME on it.

BTW, if it makes you feel better, HP was having trouble with the new ME workstations as well.

Re: Windows ME and CD-Writer Plus 8110i

I have the 8200i, and no special drivers were required for ME. ME has been an advantage as I no longer have to try and get disaster recovery to work. The drivers work ok for this version, after I loaded the latest updates for windows 98. (I didn't have it working until the updates were installed)
