xp drivers not helping...(7200e)

i downloaded and installed the drivers for XP and they're still not working. for a while it detected the drive as a cd-rom, yet never as a cdr/rw drive. now it just disappeared. i have no idea what is going on. any help would be much appreciated.

Windows XP has CD recording software built into the operating system; however, the HP CD-Writer 7200e and 7500e series drives are not supported as recording devices by this software. The HP CD recording software upgrades for Windows XP must be installed.

ok, i understand that with the parallel port drivers XP should only recognize it as a CD-ROM, but for some reason it just disappears after a while.

That sounds more like an issue with XP not being able to keep a driver bound. Have you reported this issue with MS?

Re: xp drivers not helping...(7200e)

now this is even more strange. windows xp suddenly recognized it as a cd-rom and a recorder. it identifies it perfectly. so i load up nero 5.5 and proceed to try and burn a CD. it tells me that my cd-r isn't writable, yet when i press the "medium info" button it tells me that it's a blank cd-r, 80min. furthermore it says, "medium required for the compilation: CD-R/RW, medium in the recorder: CD-R/RW" and then it just ejects. i'm starting to pull my hair out.

You can use this program to check for ASPI installation. But you will probely not find any ASPI files. Mayby that's why our burner do not work!

Re: xp drivers not helping...(7200e)

I've got a 7200i (which I understand is the same drive without the parallel port paraphenalia)

I upgraded(?) to XP and then waited for the drivers to become available.

I still haven't seen any drivers - just 2 programs DLA and RecordNow.

The website advises that the XP default IDE drivers will show up in device manager - they do

when I try to tun either of the new apps they just stop responding and I have to press the off switch to get out of it

sorry to just add questions !

any help appreciated - lots of CDs to burn and no burner - seriously considering a return to 98

This problem is not limited to XP it happens on millenium edition as well. What seems to happen is the drivers for the drive disrupt the aspi drivers which are usually used by scsi!!??. Also its not limited to HP drives it occurs with others too including internal ones on the ide bus. After a week of frustration, I and my brother in law wound up reinstalling the os because we could not fix the problem any other way! That recognised the hardware during the hardware scan and installed the appropriate drivers. Its a brut force method it did work for us though.

Re: xp drivers not helping...(7200e)

Similar effect for me.

I have a TEAC W540E rewriter and use Win2kSP2. In Nero's Help tool (can be downloaded or browsed online) I found the following, according to the two error log entries (see abstract at end of message):

Invalid track information: On some boards the error occurs if the CD Writer is connected as a slave. Please connect the CD Writer as the master. In particular if a mainboard with the 430VX chipset is being used.

invalid field in the parameter list: If you are using a mainboard witha VIA chip set and the harddisk is being operated in UDMA mode, then you should change this. Please set the transfer mode to PIO in the BIOS.

Since I use a Via chipset, and my burner was on the same UDMA66 cable as my UDMA100 HDD (primary slave), I replaced it to sec master so both of the above were satisfied. I've just finished burning with 40x max speed on a 16x TDK D-view cdr :)

ABSTRACT: especially if you have a via chipset, make sure that your rewriter is connected as master, with no UDMA-enabled HDD on the same cable. One or both of these might be required.
