HPE 5820X Thoughts
I've been looking at options to add more 10G ports to my homelab. I'd like to add additional servers to create a VMware cluster to enable some redundancy. I currently have a pair of HPE Aruba 2540 switches. One upstairs, one downstairs linked with fiber over 10G. The switch in the basement is in the server rack and only has 1 free SFP+ port after the link to upstairs and redundant links to my R720 esxi host.
I'd just go with a 5406R ZL2 and appropriate modules if I wanted to spend a ton of money, maybe a 3810. But I came across the discontinued 5820X (JC102a/b) models 24 port SFP+ which are pretty cheap on eBay.
I'm curious on opinions/input since the last firmware update was released back in 2018. Since the other switches are still current and supported, and this would likely become a core. I don't really have a problem with the age of the actual hardware. I'm just not sure about the old firmware piece. Similar reason I haven't looked much at the first gen 5406 which would be another consideration if I go with EOL gear.
