my laptop, a HP compaq nx9110 model, freezes while playing a video and moving the mouse together. When I dont have a mouse active the problem does not appear but when a mouse is on and moving the system freezes and I have to do a hard reboot (pressing the turn off button for 10 seconds).
I have already test two mouses, the one is a logitech cordless optical mouse, so I don't think that the problem lies in the mouse. Also all drivers are isntalled and working correctly and the motherboard bios is already updated.
Does anybody has an idea why this is happening and how to fix it?
Thanks,
Phanos

Re: My Laptop freezes while playing video
Check if anything is flagged in any way in Device Manager. The 2 mice? that you've tried; are they both USB? If yes, do you have access to a PS/2 mouse for testing purposes. If they were both PS/2, can you get a USB mouse to test with?
Also, if you haven't already done so, get the Operating System - Enhancements and QFEs by going here and choosing your OS:

Re: My Laptop freezes while playing video
thanks a lot for your respond. The first mouse was indeed flag and this is the reason I bought a new one. The second mouse however is not flag in the device manager and it appears to functioning properly.
Both mice are usb. My laptop does not has a PS/2 port. My first mouse had a converter for a PS/2 port and I already test it on another computer an it was functioning properly. The reason I bought the second one was because I thought that there was a compatiblity issue with my laptop and that mouse.
I think I already have installed the Operating System - Enhancements
and QFEs but I will do it again and let you know. There are two files: System Enhancements Disk for Microsoft Windows XP and System Enhancements Disk for Microsoft Windows XP (Service Pack 2). Should I installed both? I already have SP2 for win XP Pro.
Also the problem appears not only while I play video but also when I play audio and mp3 songs so it gets really annoyning since I can not use my laptop to work and listen to music at the same time.
Thanks again for the respond,
Phanos

Re: My Laptop freezes while playing video
Also, you could try reducing the "hardware acceleration" properties.

Re: My Laptop freezes while playing video
thanks also for the reply. My audio drivers are the latest found on the HP website. I will try reducing the "hardware acceleration" and test for the problem again. I will let you know.
Thanks,

Re: My Laptop freezes while playing video
Just upgrade to a 80GB, 5400rpm hard drive. Ram already upgrade to 768GB (640GB main memory and 128 graphic memory). Disk is constanlty defragment using Diskepper and perfect disk.
Sorry but I don't understand what you mean by "contiguous swap file set up". Did you mean the windows pagefile? This is controlled by Windows XP.
Problem still there :(
Thanks,
Phanos

Re: My Laptop freezes while playing video
1) slow system performance
2) excessive memory paging
3) out of memory messages
4) BSODs
5) poor video performance
6) irregular errors
7) general bad performance.

Re: My Laptop freezes while playing video
I have just finished but the problem has not been fixed. The problem appears to still exist.
Should I return the pagefile back to "system manage size" or should I keep the settings as you described above.
Thanks for all,
Phanos

Re: My Laptop freezes while playing video
What are you using to play audio and video with? Have you tried an alternate program?
Also, have you tried changing the IRQ that the mouse is using to another, non-shared one?

Re: My Laptop freezes while playing video
I am using windows media player, real player, powerdvd. All have the same effect.
I upload two files about my IRQ and the conficts/sharing from the sytsem information. I can not find the usb mouse IRQ.
Also how do you change the IRQ for a device?
Thanks,
Phanos

Re: My Laptop freezes while playing video
I am afraid so far I have not yet found a solution. I even contact HP about it and they told me to do a lot a thinks (including removing the partition of the hard drive and then reinstalling windows all over), but with no luck.
Eventually they told me to contact the local technical support in order to deliver the laptop to them and have it repaired since they believed that there is some hardware problem with the laptop.
I did not contact them since this will take a lot of time and the warranty has already expired for my laptop. Also I am not sure that the laptop is truly faulty since I have recently install linux on it and the problem does not happen there.
Finally I am not sure but perhaps the problem lies with the irq settings. There is conflict with the PCI to USB open host controller, the ATI Graphic card the bus controllers for cardbus and IEEE 1394. I was unable to test that however since I can not change the default irq settings for Windows XP.
Please let me know if you found anything so I can try it as well to see if that will also fix my problem
Thanks

Re: My Laptop freezes while playing video
Have you tried disconnecting the mouse and using only the touchpad? I'm assuming this model has a touchpad.
If that works, I would try disabling the touchpad while the mouse is installed.
Make a great day!

Re: My Laptop freezes while playing video
only with the touchpad everything works great even if the mouse is connected but NOT MOVED.
I tried what you said but the touchpad is not allowed to be disable within the device manager so I unistall it and I tried again but the problem still occurs.
I have read somewhere that when a mouse share the same irq with other devices it can create problems.
What do you think?
Thank and have a great to you too,
Phanos

Re: My Laptop freezes while playing video
I simply turned off the touchpad by pressing the button that disables it.
But the problem still remained. I also have tried flashing the BIOS and that didn't work either.
Any other solutions?

Re: My Laptop freezes while playing video
With the mouse connected (in the failing configuration), but using only the touchpad, go to Device Manager and select the top level (the computer). Click view, select 'Resources by connection', then expand the 'Interrupt Request (IRQ)' section. Please capture that entire list and post it here. While you're in there, expand the 'Input/outout (I/O)' and Memory sections and examine the contents. There should be no overlap. If you're unfamiliar with the hexadecimal counting system, there are 16 values per position (they are 0-9 just like in decimal, then A, B, C, D, E, and F). If you can't make sense of it, capture them and post them here as well. When you post a file, use .gif rather than .bmp. The files will be smaller that way.
I am attaching my PS/2 mouse driver, for example.
Thanks and make a great day!

Re: My Laptop freezes while playing video
I did as you instructed.
I believed that you can find the files. I have used winzip in order to upload both files.
Thanks,
