ProCurve 1700-24 Password

I don't want to delete the configuration on the above switch because the password is lost. Is it possible via the console port to logon to this switch without knowing the password ?- when first configured - there is no password, will it for example accept last 4 digits of serial number to get me in. ? 

Seems insane to delete the whole configuration here , especially when you don't know what that is without logging in 

Any help appreciated.
