Sound problems

I have an HP Pavilion p6710f desktop. I have a coaxial cable connected to the digital out jack. When I attempt to play music files through either J River Media or Itunes I get the message that no audio devices are installed. System worked just fine until a couple of weeks ago. Could use some help.
