0% rebuild of logical drive in HP Compaq dc5750 microtower

I have an
HP Compaq dc5750 Mmicrotower
AMD Athlon (tm) 64 x 2 dual
core processor 4800+
2.49 GHz 4 GB RAM

Right now I am running XP professional sevice pack 3
I want to upgrade it to Windows 7

My hard drive is 250 GB with raid mirrored drive. I bought a new 500 GB hard drive, now can I just swap that out for the 250? or do I need to buy another 500 and replace both?

What I initially planned was to put in the new 500 and load windows 7 on clean drive and then install the old one back with data only. I have TB external hard drives for back up.

The message for 0 percent rebuild of logical drive - does this mean that one of the drives is bad? If so how do I know which one?

Is Raid and mirrored drives all built into system or can it just be converted to standard hard drive with secondary hard drive being the old one with all the current data on it?

I am at a loss with Raid and mirrored drives, any help would be much appreciated.

Mirroring a 250 and 500 GB drive, will give you 250. The smallest drive wins. I would see if you controller supports two RAID 1 arrays. Do 250GB for OS and 500GB for app/data.

Thank you so much for answering Michael. Good idea on running two raids but now how do I check to see if can support two. And still concerned about the 0% logical drive rebuild. any further help much appreciated.

0% rebuild means you have a bad drive. If your controller can do a spare drive. Add another 250GB as a spare and see if it will fail over. 0% rebuild means its not rebuilding. Either the drive sizes are slightly mismatched or its not detecting the replacement drive.

On my LSI Logic MegaRAID 8708EM2 at home, I set the coercion algorithm to 1GB. It slightly reduces the drives so they match in RAID. It also places RAID array slightly smaller than the spares so they can rebuild.

On Windows XP to 7. You can't do a direct upgrade. I would do a clean Windows 7 x64 install. Personally, when switching OS I like a clean install. No legacy drivers and stuff left behind. I like it clean.

You could add a second RAID controller if you can't do two RAID arrays. LSI Logic have excellent controllers.
