1.2TB SAS HDD temperature 60 C - OK? - DL380 Gen9
Hi,
I've just setup a new DL380 Gen9 using 7 x 1.2TB, 2.5" SAS 10K drives.
(HDDs Part No: 718162-B21, Manufactured Aug 2014)
All drives have a current temperature above 55 °C, some have 60-61 °C, even they are not that busy yet.
Environmental temp. is around 21 C, system inlet temp. 22 C.
I've checked some of the older DL380 Gen8 and G7 with smaller HDDs (300 oder 600GB). It's between 35 C - 50 C.
Can anyone comment or has experience with the 1.2TB 10k drive type, if 60 °C is a normal operating/surface temperature?
The QuickSpecs only mention the system inlet temperature.
Regards,
Henry

Re: 1.2TB SAS HDD temperature 60 C - OK? - DL380 Gen9
Hi,
It could be some firmware mismatch between the controller and the hard drives.
I would suggest to udpate firmware for Smart Array Controller and the hard drives.
BIOS and iLO4 firmware update is also recommended.
Thank You!

Re: 1.2TB SAS HDD temperature 60 C - OK? - DL380 Gen9
Hi,
thanks for this hint but I've already done a manual update of all components in the first step.
Drives: HPD1 (were already up to date on arrival)
SmartArray: 1.34
ILO: 2.03
BIOS: P89 1.21
I've downloaded and installed it one by one from the HP website.
I tried to use Intelligent Provision firmware update but it offers old versions (for ILO) or didn't offer any update at all (for the Bios and SmartArray).
I've checked already the Seagate specs of the drive and they recommend 60°C for short time period only.
This is a new Gen9 system and I worry about the reliability.
I've attached a screenshot (sorry for German display language) . After startup the temp is around 45-50° C and increasing with runtime. The hot standby has lowest temp. less or around 50°C.

Re: 1.2TB SAS HDD temperature 60 C - OK? - DL380 Gen9
Hi,
same problem I have encountered on HP DL380 Gen9 with 15K 300GB SAS 2,5" drives. Situation is really strange:
1. HDDs working temperatures ~60C, sometimes raised up to 72C,
and
2. No thermal shutdown occured.
One drive already pre failed.
I have flashed latest firmware (BIOS, drives, controllers) from 'HP Service Pack for ProLiant' 2015.10.0, but it didn't help. Server load is not so big. Environment temperature 21C.
It is not the case when temperatures are incorrectly shown due to firmware incompatibility, I stopped server and removed one drive, it was really hot, was hard to hold in hands. I would say for this server, airflow through empty drive cages are much bigger with comparing to air flow through HDDs. Kind of air flow limiter want put to the place of two empty drive cages. Attached two files.
Would be interesting to know HP specialists opinion about airflow trought HDD's of this server.
Regards,
Andrius.

Did the firmware updates solved the issue ?
