1720 - S.M.A.R.T. Hard Drive Detects imminent Failure

After starting the server i'm getting this message " 1720 - S.M.A.R.T. Hard Drive Detects imminent Failure".After this i have to press F1 key & the server works O.K.
I checked this error in Ask Compaq forum & it suggested that i have to upgrade the SCSI controller firmware using SP9895.I created the disks using this & tried to upgrade the firmware but it does not detect any scsi controllers in the server.Could Compaq tell me why this error comes & why the firmware upgradation does not recognize any scsi controllers??

I'm glad to see Compaq is there to help us when we have questions.

sunilkarkhanis - I had this happen to my 1600 a year ago and I ended up having to change out one of the drives. I believe it was developing bad sectors. If your server is still under warranty, I'd just play it safe and get a new HD for it. Good luck.

This is simply a hard disk error... There is no trick to fixing it shy of actually replacing the drive that is giving this error.

Re: 1720 - S.M.A.R.T. Hard Drive Detects imminent Failure

I have this error on 1 of my drives (4 drives in Raid 5). How do I go about replacing the drive? Can I simply shutdown the server, replace drive and reboot? Will the array see the new drive and rebuild its Raid 5?

The reason I ask is that I know when the drive is actually failed that is exactly what needs to be done, but I want to be sure that before I remove an imminently failing drive this procedure will work the same way.

Thanks

Re: 1720 - S.M.A.R.T. Hard Drive Detects imminent Failure

Depends on your server - many servers allows 'hot-swaps' of drives, allowing you to pull the failed disk with the server up and simply slot in a replacement. The rebuild will then take place in the background, allowing you to continue with no downtime.
If your server does not support hot swapping, or if you're not sure - then your method of shutting down and doing the swap will do just fine. On reboot you should get an 'F key' option to allow the rebuild to happen.
