I know... not supported on a 1850R but works anyway! Applied the Compaq Support Pack for Windows 2000 which normally will control the fans and slow them down. The fans are stuck in high speed... what would cause this? unit is in a very cold location, no heat problems.

hm, did you install the newest supportpack from HP? It's for W2k03 also, so it should work.

Re: 1850R with Windows 2003 fans at high speed.
Yes, sure did. Actually had put the Support Pack for Win2K/1850R on it but saw some items missing. Put the DL380/Win2K3 support pack on which seemed to work fine but that seems to be when I noticed the fan volume. Put the 1850R/Win2K Support pack on again. No change.

Solution
Requirements from Microsoft for Windows Server 2003 support eliminated a lot of legacy systems. The 1850R fell into that category. Because it couldn't be certified (along with servers from many manufacturers from that timeframe), drivers for the ProLiant Systems Management Controller were never developed. The WS03 ProLiant Support Pack has the Advanced Systems Management Controller driver, which is for systems more recent than the 1850R and those that can be certified for WS03. It's the Systems Management Controller that has control over the fans. Without a driver for it, there is not temperature regulation.
