6500 Upgrade to Pentium III Xeon

I have recently upgraded a 6500 to Dual Pentium III Xeon from a single Pentium Pro system using the upgrade kit from Compaq. When i power it up it says that the processors are unsuported. I know that it requires a bios update as the bios on the motherboard is dated 1998 but i cannot update this because it is not booting. Is there any way of doing this.

Re: 6500 Upgrade to Pentium III Xeon

you need to use your copy of smart start to upgrade your bios. you can do this one of two ways, you can upgrade from your smart start cd or you can download the bios upgrade from the compaq support web site. place in your cd/floppy and boot your server, it'll boot up into a form of compaq dos with a gui interface, you'll be given instructions from there on what to do next. a word of warning though. read the instructions! if you power off the server while it is upgrading the bios, you'll be ordering a new motherboard. chill

Smart start or Boos Boo table disk will only work if the server booted properly, after the processor check it stops with the following message:- Unsupported Processor - System Halted...

ok, try going through the check list you got with the support stuff, eg check cables, check that the processors are seated properly, also what speed is the dip switch settings set at check the switch setting sw2, sw3, the same speed as your processors?
speed s1 s2 s3 s4
400 on on off on
450 off on off on
500 on on off off

WHy not fall back to the PPro and fix the BIOS with the upgrade tools then
hit it with the Xeons

Not to put a finer point on it, but to revert back to the PPro would involve reverting back to the old motherboard, which would not solve the problem our friend has, due to the motherboard being entirely different.
