A40 on Gen11 DL580?

Hi, a research group I work with has recently bought a DL580 Gen11, intending to use a GPU, but did not want to buy the "stock" L40, opting for an A40.

We noticed the Gen 11 GPU kit is PCI-E 5 compliant. Therefore, there's a 12vhpwr connector, but the A40 needs an 8-pin connector.

Should we want to use the A40, would we need to look for an 869821-001 or 875097-001 cable (whose differences aren't very clear to me), or would we need to buy an entire Gen 10 GPU kit and replace the riser as well? I would like to know if the SENSE0 pin needs to be fed back to the Gen11 GPU kit riser, considering the A40 needs full power from both the PCI-E rail and the power cable and, according to what I've researched, an open SENSE0 pin will limit the power output.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Your DL580 Gen11 GPU kit uses a 12VHPWR connector, but the NVIDIA A40 requires an 8-pin PCIe power connector. To use the A40, consider these options:

-Check for Compatibility with Older HPE Cables- Try using 869821-001 or 875097-001 (8-pin PCIe power cables from Gen10).>> If the Gen11 riser supports these cables, this is the simplest solution.

Use a 12VHPWR to 8-Pin Adapter (This requires Caution) - Adapter properly sets SENSE0/SENSE1 pins to allow full power.>>If SENSE0 is left open, power may be limited to 150W, causing issues.

Replace the Gen11 GPU Kit with a Gen10 Kit (Last Resort)- This ensures native 8-pin PCIe support but downgrades the riser to PCIe 4.0.

Next Steps would be :

- Verify if your Gen11 riser supports Gen10 GPU power cables.

- If not, find an adapter that correctly routes the SENSE pins for full power

- Consider swapping to a Gen10 GPU riser only if necessary.

I hope it helps. Let me know

Re: A40 on Gen11 DL580?

I guess the easiest way to set up everything will be downgrading the riser as well.

What's the part number for the whole GPU kit, riser and cables included? Is it P23271-B21 ?

Thanks for your support.

Re: A40 on Gen11 DL580?

Would the 826704-B21 work on a DL560 Gen11? Is there a strict compatibility between server parts? If I look for Gen10 GPU kits, I mostly see parts for DL38X servers.

I'm trying to understand which kit we could be getting.

Yes, the part number P23271-B21 corresponds to the HPE DL360 Gen10 2P FH GPU Enablement v2 Kit, which includes the necessary riser and cables to enable GPU support in the HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 server>

Please note that this enablement kit is tailored for the DL360 Gen10 model. If you're working with a different server model, such as the DL380 Gen11, a different GPU enablement kit would be required. For the DL380 Gen11, the appropriate kit is the HPE DL380 Gen11 GPU Enablement Kit with part number P54627-B21.
