Adding 2nd processor to ML350 G5

Just received new box and i've installed all my upgrade components. All works well except when I add the second processor. When install it the machine wont boot. Is there a jumper or a dip switch that needs to be configured to allow the 2nd processor?

try new CPU alone ...by itself try to boot up !!

then add the other one to slot2 , also BIOS update will be good ! latest one..

yes follow seehigh step just try Proc 2 in slot 1, if that step works, so put the other processor in the second slot.

let me ask are you adding the Procesor Power module (PPM) 2 for the second processor

the first PPM is embedded but the second you need to install it if you add a second Proc.

Hello Mickey,
While upgrading to 2nd processor, it has been seen that the server will not work, unless you install the new processor in the first slot. Seems like there is a specific hardware requirement by the new processor. This has been seen mostly in Generation 5 servers. The situation is worse for customers who have to upgrade multiple(10-20-50) servers. Hopefully a new firmware will correct this issue.

Coming back to your issue, I am sure you have the latest BIOS firmware revision before you add a 2nd processor.

Thanks for you replies and I have tried all that you have suggested.

The new processor works in the 1st slot. Soon as I put the original in the second slot it won't boot.... Any other suggestions??????

using one Proc at a time in slot one server boots up fine? right?

so now if you add a second Proc in slot 2 server wont boot up? right? no matter which processor you put in slot 2? if so O would say System board is bad
is there any light indicator?

both processor match each other.?

also remember PPM 2 (processor power module) has to be installed in order for the sever to boot

well in the case you tried all the possible scenarios with the Procs (swapping, one at time, inserting, PPM)

I'm thinking call HP to get a System board replacement

OK, swapped with another processor and got it to boot. But now that's all it does. It posts fine then soon as it hits the Windows splash screen it keeps rebooting....

did you update the System ROM already?
try downloading firmware CD and apply it?

does the server load windows fine with just one Proc?

clear NVRAM also (do you know the procedure?)

I am new to the HP servers environment. So please forgive me if my question sounds ignorant. Where can one purchase this PPM2? What is the part number for this? I have a ML350 G5 which I am adding a 2nd CPU as well.

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Actually I couldn't find the PPM2 in the partsurfer site, since it's an added option, not an existing part of the server.

Any help with the part number is greatly appreciated!

Download from HP "Processor Identification Utility".Make a bootable diskette and after that a bootable cd-rom.
Put the processors one at a time and turn on the server with the cd-rom inside.
Find that the 2 processors are identical.
Look carefully at "Stepping"
If they are not identical exchange the old one to obtain an identical pair.
