adding a SAS expander to a ML350gen9LFF

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this community, so please accept my appologies for any stupid questions...

My actual configuration is:
Proliant ML350gen9 LFF 24xLFF drives.
Box 1 is connectec to the onboard P440ar controller (8 SAS disks) via 2x SFF8087 cables.
Box 2 and 3 are connected to a P840 controller via 2x Y cables (SAS/Sata disks as well as SSDs).

I would like to add an expander. I assume that 761879-001 should be right, a confirmation would be much appreciated.

Now to the question:
1.) Do I have to buy the original cable (779300-001) to connect the P840 to port 1/2 of the expander or can I use one of the Y cables that actually connect the P840 and the HDD boxes?

2.) Do I have to buy 3x the original cable (778556-001) to connect the expander to the HDD backplanes or can I use 6x standard SFF8087 to SFF8087 cables?

Thanks a lot in advance

Alfred

Re: adding a SAS expander to a ML350gen9LFF

Hello,

thanks a lot for the quick replies.
I found the documentation you linked before, but this does not answer my question:
Do I have to use the original cable kit 790505-001 or can I use the existing cable (fromt the P840 to the HDD backplane) to connect the P840 to port 1/2 of the expander and use standard SFF8087 to SFF8087 cables to connect the expander to the backplanes?

Is there just a difference in length or is there a difference in functionality?

best regards
Alfred

Hi,

According to the QuickSpecs and the SAS Expander Kit https://partsurfer.hpe.com/Search.aspx?searchText=769635-B21

The cable part number is 790505-001, if you have any other cable, not sure if it fits.  Do you have the part number of that cable?

Thank You!

Re: adding a SAS expander to a ML350gen9LFF

Hi, just if somebody else has the same question as I had:
the answer is:

1.) The existing Y-cable that previously connected the controller and the HDD backplanes does work, the length is not ideal...
2.) Standard SFF8087 cables work, again cable length is not ideal so cabling is a little bit tricky.

Best
