adding independent drives to server without adding to the Raid Array

I have a DL180 G6 server with a P140 Smart array controller. I would like to add a couple of drives for storage without adding them to the raid array. I have tried to add them to the server by simply plugging them in the server does not see them. Do i need to preformate them befor installing them? Is it even possible to add the drives?

You have to add them to the controller.  You can create a new array, or a couple of arrays with just one disk each using RAID 0
