Adding NVMe backplane, 2 single-slot cards to DL360 Gen9
I'm equipping my DL360 Gen9 (my first HPE server) with new components.
- 1 NVMe backplane to hold 2x NVMe m.2 SSD using x8 PCIe connector at slot 2
- 1 single-slot GPU card using x16 PCIe connector at slot 1 (consumes more than 75W power)
- 1 single-slot GPU card using x16 PCIe connector at slot 3 (consumes more than 75W power)
My server has parts:
- 775421-001 (cage for riser card)
- 775420-001 (board for slot 3)
- 785497-001 (board for slot 1 and slot 2)
Out of curiosity, from the document for Gen10, there is a primary riser board 875548-001 which has an NVMe interface port.
First question of all, for my Gen9, can I just plug an NVMe backplane board into slot 2, and BIOS will recognise it? Whatelse do I need to do in terms of h/w and BIOS?
Second question is, I found only 1 8-pin PCIe power connector on the riser board for slot 1. There are no other PCIe power connector for slot 3, nor on the motherboard. Does it mean that I can only use 1 board that uses more than 75W power?
Or, what is the total power the 8-pin power connector provide?
Thank you for these noob questions.

Re: Adding NVMe backplane, 2 single-slot cards to DL360 Gen9
Hi charleslcso,
Thank you for the Post.
For Gen9 you may require NVME Enablement Kit to be installed for NVME Drive configuration.
Details of the Parts would be on below link :
Option Parts : https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=emr_na-c04444424
And for Slot 3 we dont see any additional information except this needs 2nd Processor to be installed.
Quickspecs :
https://www.hpe.com/psnow/doc/c04346229.pdf
Please do refer the Cabling from the Maintenance Guide : which may be helpful
https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=c04441985
Please do go through the Quickspecs and Maintenance Guide which could get you more information related to the Cabling and parts.
Thank you

Re: Adding NVMe backplane, 2 single-slot cards to DL360 Gen9
Thank you for your help. Really appreciate it.
Now I've decided to just add the 2x SFF backplane to add 2 extra SATA ports, and connect to the onboard SATA port 1 and port 2 using the onboard b140i.
The part no. is HP 775401-001.
I can source the board, and I can source the data cable. But I can't source the power cable.
Moving along ever slowly, I can confirm what connector to use on both ends of the cable. I can get someone to build one for me.
But, I don't know the pin/cable order.
So, either:
1. I can buy one standard part
2. build one using the right pin order
Can you help more?

Re: Adding NVMe backplane, 2 single-slot cards to DL360 Gen9
Hi charleslcso,
It's always best to use the Spare Part number and order from the authorized Partners.
784621-001 Mini-SAS cable assembly kit (Includes two mini-SAS cables) - For connecting the 8-bay Small Form Factor (SFF) hard drive cage to the drive controller board
875096-001 Power cable kit
If its anyone of the above (or if you have Part number) you may proceed to order.
Thank you

Re: Adding NVMe backplane, 2 single-slot cards to DL360 Gen9
I think the power cable part number is wrong; it has 6-pins on one end.
From the photo of the board, it has a 4-pin connector.
From the look of the power connector on my motherboard (according to User Manual, I located the connector for this board), it also has the exact 4-pin connector.

Re: Adding NVMe backplane, 2 single-slot cards to DL360 Gen9
Hi charleslcso,
Would request to check the Option and Spare parts, and then order the Part.
Pictures of the Cables would also be available once you check on Part Surfer using the Spare Part number (for few components) : https://partsurfer.hpe.com/
Thank you

Re: Adding NVMe backplane, 2 single-slot cards to DL360 Gen9
Hello RamKS,
I have searched the page you've suggested. I checked every single part listed for DL360 Gen9 2SFF HDD Kit.
There isn't a part that match the 4-pin to 4-pin power cable!
Would you be able to help me identify the part?
Much thanks!
