Adding P400 controller card + 300 GB SAS HDD to ML 350 G5

Hi,

Server: ML 350 G5

Customer is looking to extend the life of a server by adding an additional controller card (there is a spare pci slot) and adding more storage (Available room for 4 x 300 GB SAS drives to be installed).

Can anyone comment on doing this type of upgrade, pitfalls suggestions.

I was generally going to following something like this

Scope of work

• Bring server down
• take back up image via Acronis CD
• Install HDD + Smart Array Raid Controller
• Boot up with HP Smart Start CD
• Configure Raid controller and new partition.
• Bring server Up
• Copy data to new partition
• Ensure login script for new users maps to new drive
• Test access to new drive.

ML350G5 have the one HDD hot-plug cage only so new add-on disks will be connected to existing SmartArray controller. Just plug in the new HDD (you can do it online),run ACU ( Array Configuration Utility) and create  new RAID and logical Volume.  If you want install the new Smart Array controller you need external HDD enclosure  to adding new HDD (e.g. SA P411 w/external port and D2600)
