Array Controller as boot device??

I am just building a proliant ML370 G3 with SmartArray 532 controller. Will configure it as Raid 5. Is it best to make the controller the boot device??

Thanks.

Re: Array Controller as boot device??

there is no problem having the Smart controller as the boot device - if that is what you want to do. Just set the Smart Controller as "First" in the Boot Controller Order" section of System Config.

Thanks,

Thanks for your quick reply - but could you tell me what the benefit is of having the controller as the boot device?

Re: Array Controller as boot device??

Since you are configuring the hotplug drives as a RAID 5 then you must set the SA532 to your boot device. Otherwise you will not have a drive to boot to. You can use your OS to carve the RAID5 up into multiple partitions if needed once you are up and running. The SA 532 will out perform software RAID and since you have it you might as well use it that way your boot partition is protected from failure.

hope this helps,
