I'm trying to configure my DL380 G6 with the most RAM I can for the best value vs. cost.
In reading the documentation, guidelines must be followed based on the rank and speed of the RAM.
Quad rank will only allow 2 sticks and dual rank will allow 3 but the RAM runs slower.
I'm still learning servers which is the reason for my home lab but in my experience, more RAM means better performance but with the RAM slowed down it seems the performance would be affected.
So would less RAM give better performance if I used the quad rank?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Best memory configuration
Have a look in here
https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=emr_na-c01761995
That link shows that the maximum amount per slot you can have for the G6 is 8GB, which if you have all the ranks filled in and both CPU's in place you can have 144GB in Dual-rank modules.
Those seems to be the ram's you are looking for, I have a DL360 Gen7 with the PC3-10600R kit.

Thanks so much for your reply.
I'm asking this because I have a 2nd server I want to get going in my home lab.
I know RAM larger than 8GB is supported because I am now running 144 GB of RAM in the following configuration:
PROC 1 DIMM 1G : not installed
PROC 1 DIMM 2D : 16384 MB 1067 MHz
PROC 1 DIMM 3A : 16384 MB 1067 MHz
PROC 1 DIMM 4H : not installed
PROC 1 DIMM 5E : 16384 MB 1067 MHz
PROC 1 DIMM 6B : 16384 MB 1067 MHz
PROC 1 DIMM 7I : not installed
PROC 1 DIMM 8F : 4096 MB 1333 MHz
PROC 1 DIMM 9C : 4096 MB 1333 MHz
PROC 2 DIMM 1G : not installed
PROC 2 DIMM 2D : 16384 MB 1067 MHz
PROC 2 DIMM 3A : 16384 MB 1067 MHz
PROC 2 DIMM 4H : not installed
PROC 2 DIMM 5E : 16384 MB 1067 MHz
PROC 2 DIMM 6B : 16384 MB 1067 MHz
PROC 2 DIMM 7I : not installed
PROC 2 DIMM 8F : 4096 MB 1333 MHz
PROC 2 DIMM 9C : 4096 MB 1333 MHz
The 2nd server is a Dell R710 and it has similar memory requirements to those of the DL380.
Dual Rank is likely less expensive than QR.
I'm just wondering if someone with more experience than I have can suggest if there is enough of a cost difference for it to make a difference.
Thanks in advance.

SolutionHi @glen4cindy I am running my homelab on DR and I have not had any problems with performance. I run a G7 with 216GB total and it is has been deliverying great performance to date.
