black screen with mouse cursor

After a failed install of windows updates on a ML150G5 server (windows Server 2008 Standard edition x86) we are unable to login to the operating system.
When the server boots, he goes (after the initial loading screen) to a black screen with a mouse cursor that is movable.
Starting up in safe mode, last known config etc all results in the same black screen with the same movable mouse cursor.
We upgraded the firmware of the ML150 to the latest version (7/6/2009) and also the ILO board.
Anyone has any ideas/suggestions?
