Breaking Mirror on the ML/DL G1 to G4 servers

Last time (Samrtstart 5.5) we can break the mirror by going to the ACU and manually break the mirror (Raid 1). When we installed the latest PSP's, I could not find the feature anymore. We are breaking mirror as a means of failsafe. How is it done now? Can I just take out the disk? Can the broken disk still boot if I used it back on the same (or another) server?

Re: Breaking Mirror on the ML/DL G1 to G4 servers

Hi Jamesky,

In the latest ACU we donot have this feature. The option is to turn off the server, remove the Harddisk. That will break the mirror. If you need to use this disk back, turn off the server install the disk and restart the server and it will boot from that disk.

The only precaution is donot plug/unplug the HardDisk when the server is up(hot) and running.

Raj.

There is a Whitepaper about this on the ProLiant site under the storage section:

"RAID 1: breaking mirrors and rebuilding drives " - HOWTO, May 2005

Actually if you use our latest SS CD and ACU the break mirror option is available again and work perfectly, it divides your mirror into 2 RAID 0 exactle the same

Re: Breaking Mirror on the ML/DL G1 to G4 servers

Here are the instructions:
Splitting a Raid

Splitting can only be done with a RAID 1 or a RAID 1+0

Splitting is a process where you can divide a RAID 1 or RAID 1+0, into 2 RAID 0 arrays.
To do it you must follow these steps:

1. Run ACU from the Smart Start CD
2. Select the array with the RAID 1 or RAID 1+0 configuration
3. Select the option that says Split the Array
4. Now you will get on the screen 2 arrays with RAID 0 configuration
5. Save the configuration
6. BEFORE you reboot the server, you must take out one of the HDD that now has the RAID 0 configuration because if you donâ t do it, the controller will find 2 arrays with the exact same info and it wonâ t boot up
7. Reboot the server
8. Get into the ACU of the OS or the Smartstart CD
9. Delete the array of the HDD you took out
10. Put the HDD you took out back
11. After that you will be able to expand the RAID 0, migration, etc
You heve a question... I have an aswer!!!
