Can DL380 gen 10 boot with only second CPU?

Hello community,

I have a bit strange situation. I have DL380 gen 10 server with CPU in socket 1, socket 2 is empty.

My issue is that I want to install GPU but the power cable from the motherboard to the GPU is too short to reach GPU in riser 1.

Since I don´t have 2nd CPU I cannot move GPU to riser2 therefore I was thinking to move GPU to riser 2 and CPU to socket 2 leaving socket 1 empty.

Now the question is will the server boot in such configuration? with empty CPU socket 1 and populated only CPU socket 2?

Do I need to setup something in BIOS first?

The Server will not work without CPU 1.

Some components like SATA, USB, LOM, and iLO are connected to the Intel Lewisburg Chipset and this is wired to CPU 1.

Hello @gvidaszg ,

The server requires Processor 1 (CPU socket 1) to be occupied for the system to work properly. Leaving CPU socket 1 empty and solely populated with CPU socket 2 is not a supported configuration and will prevent the server from running.

Alternative Solutions:

Use a GPU power extension cable.

Purchase a longer or compatible GPU power extension cable to connect the GPU in riser 1 without rearranging components.
Install a second CPU.

To use riser 2 for GPU installation, populate CPU socket 2 with a compatible processor.

Thank you for your quick reply! I was assuming that it would not work but better to be safe than sorry.

I already have HPE 8-Pin Keyed GPU-Power Cable Kit - 871829-B21 but it is too short...

Any suggestions on a part number or compatible cable (preferrably from Amazon).
