Can I put an IDE harddrive in the Proliant 1850
I got a few 1850 proliants that were phased out from my company and was looking to do other things with them like building a music file server etc. Is it possible to put a large ide hard drive on the cd rom cable rather than buying an expensive scsi drives? If so how big?
Not sure if it is possible but i thought i'd ask.
Thanks
Sean

Re: Can I put an IDE harddrive in the Proliant 1850
Please do not install an IDE at the CDROM channel because it makes the system very unstable if it does get picked up by the bios. Other way would be to install an IDE controller first and then attach the drive to it. I hope you remember that every time a hardware change takes place in COMPAQ servers you have to run system configuration Utility. If you dont have access to a smart start CD then you can download the utility from the following link:

Re: Can I put an IDE harddrive in the Proliant 1850
proliants with a scsi drive cage do not support ide disks as a standard.
it is a bios issue. compaq did not want to support ide disks on servers. this was a good thing to do years ago. and your servers are sort of old.
if you need large drives (100 gb plus) get a cheapo ide controller. you will not get large scsi drives for a few dollars that soon.
best regards

Re: Can I put an IDE harddrive in the Proliant 1850
I've got about 8 servers with large IDE and SCSI drives. The only gotcha is that you can not build the OS with the IDE drive connected. Build the OS on a SCSI drive and then add the IDE drive. These have been working on large and critical web servers for over 3 yrs. no problems at all. Actually there is even a second ide port on the moterboard I think...

Re: Can I put an IDE harddrive in the Proliant 1850
There are a few 9.1 GB proliant hot swappable wide ultra 2 drives, 1" high (that i think fit this later mdel 1850) on Ebay for about $25 - 35 dollars each. There are two different compaq part numbers that are referenced:
104665-001 and
386536-001
I cant find on this compaq site the differences between these drives and / or if they fit my 1850 that has the Wide Ultra 2 scsi cage.
Or should buy a few cheap 4.3gb non hot swap drives and use them internally but i need an adaptor cable which i dont have.
Thanks

Re: Can I put an IDE harddrive in the Proliant 1850
The part no mentioned is
Exchange (Restored 104665-001)
Return of defective core required.
9GB Ultra2 Wide SCSI hard drive - 72,000 RPM, 80-pin, 1.0-inch high, hot pluggable
Fine but the no is spare part number, so u need to return the defactive part back to compaq/hp.
So part number should be option part no :
and these are as follow...
9.1-GB Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 Hot Plug Drive 6 313706-B21
18.2-GB Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 Hot Plug Drive 6 400739-B21
36.4-GB Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 Hot Plug Drive (1.6" ) 400740-B21
9.1-GB Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 10,000 rpm Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 336357-B21
18.2-GB Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 10,000 rpm Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 128417-B21
36.4-GB Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 10,000 rpm Hot Plug Drive (1.6" ) 128420-B21
36.4-GB Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 10,000 rpm Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 179498-B21
9.1-GB Wide Ultra2 SCSI Universal Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 123065-B22
18.2-GB Wide Ultra2 SCSI Universal Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 388144-B22
9.1-GB Wide Ultra2 SCSI 10,000 rpm Universal Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 328939-B22
18.2-GB Wide Ultra2 SCSI 10,000 rpm Universal Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 128418-B22
9.1-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 10,000 rpm Universal Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 142671-B22
18.2-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 10,000 rpm Universal Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 142673-B22
36.4-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 10,000 rpm Universal Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 176496-B22
9.1-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 15,000 rpm Universal Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 188120-B22
18.2-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 15,000 rpm Universal Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 188122-B22
9.1-GB Wide Ultra2 SCSI Non-Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 349526-B21
18.2-GB Wide Ultra2 SCSI Non-Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 388143-B21
9.1-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 10,000 rpm Non-Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 142672-B21
18.2-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 10,000 rpm Non-Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 142674-B21
36.4-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 10,000 rpm Non-Hot Plug Drive (1.6" ) 142676-B21
36.4-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 10,000 rpm Non-Hot Plug Drive (1" ) 176497-B21
So when you are going to buy you are going to buy using option part number and you have the option what youcant to buy.
Regards,
Prashant S.
