Can't install Windows 2003 on DL380 G5 (with P400 controller)
I'm trying to install Windows 2003 Enterprise (32-bit) on a DL380 G5, with a P400 controller, but am having problems.
The first thing I tried was taking the files from cp011927.exe (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=1121516&prodNameId=3288134&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=MTX-d7fa2d15cd57422e9e20b2aaa5), and putting them on a floppy disk, and then booting the system with the floppy in an HP USB floppy drive. I pressed F6, and select the Windows driver. However, later in the installation, it again asks for the floppy, but when I press
I then tried installing without F6 and the driver on the floppy. This time, it actually got partially through the Windows installation, but with ~10 minutes remaining, I got a blue-screen (STOP 0x0....0D1).
I then when into BIOS (RBSU) and disabled Virtual Install Disk (VID), and used F6 and the floppy, but the installation again gets stuck when it asks for the floppy the 2nd time.
I've found some references to the bluescreen with STOP 0x0...0D1, but no real solutions. I've also found some references to replacing storport, but since I can't even get Win2K3 to install in the 1st place, I can't replace any files.
Can anyone tell me how I can get Win2K3 installed on this machine?
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Can't install Windows 2003 on DL380 G5 (with P400 controller)
BTW:
VID enabled ==> Can see the hard drive(s) in Windows installation (partitions, etc.)
VID disabled & F6/Floppy ==> Can see the hard drive(s) in Windows installation (partitions, etc.)
VID disabled & no floppy ==> Windows installer says no disk.
In other words, it appears that both with VID enabled and with (VID disabled & the floppy with the driver), the Windows installer can see the hard drives.
The problem is that with VID enabled, I get the BSOD STOP 0x0...0D1, and with VID disabled & F6/floppy, the installer asks for the floppy the 2nd time.
Also, FYI, I forgot to mention that the system has 4x146 GB drives, but in the installer it looks like one ~400GB drive, so I think that the 4 drives must be configured as a non-mirrored RAID.
Also, I wanted to confirm that the floppy with the driver has a TXTSETUP.OEM file on it (which I got by running that cp011927.exe and copying the exploded files to the floppy).

Re: Can't install Windows 2003 on DL380 G5 (with P400 controller)
Hi Jim,
have you tried to deploy an OS with Smart Start?
With it you can first create the necessary array and logical drive very easily and all needed drivers will be loaded prior to the windows installation, so no need for the ** floppy anymore...
kind regards
Markus

No, we didn't, but we'll give that a try...
Thanks,
Jim

Using Smart Start is the recommended method.
There are other alternatives in case you don't want to use it for any reason:
1. Add drivers to Windows installations
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/254078
2. Use compatible USB as floppy drive
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/platforms/usb-support.html
3. Use nlite to integrate drivers in windows image

Re: Can't install Windows 2003 on DL380 G5 (with P400 controller)
We are having a similar problem - but with a G6.
We have tried many different methods to build this machine with varying degrees of success
Using a W2003S CD it "finds" 2 virtual devices that then force the system drive up to drive "F:". There are is a "C: Removeable Drive" and "D: DVD Drive" (both inaccessible) as well as the "E: SATA DVD" drive which can see a conventional CD (SS / W2003).
Running up the machine with SS 8.30, it goes through the dialogs Ok but on restart it never finds the disk (I'm sure its tryint the phantome) and reboots to SS everytime. We have tried includes using both a 2003 CD as the source and using and SMB share to mount an ISO.
I cannot get this machine to boot a virtual CD at all - only physical devices or PXE.
I have managed to boot from PXE (Altiris DS 6.9 SP4) using WinPe (2.1) but in the TXT setup part of the install, durng the disk partition portion, I get an "Unknown disk" before the P410 array appears in the list. When the system tries to restart, I tries and fails to boot the phantom/virtual disk, fails and then tries other methods.
I have even tried DOS - this boots but at the moment I can't get the NIC drivers to work so I'm stymied there.
I can't find anyway to get remove these "phantom devices" from this system. They seem to be (guessing here) related to the 2 virtual media devices in the iLO. I'm only guessing as they seem to be a USB drive and a Optical device which is what appears in the virtual media.
I have tried to
- Completely power cycle, remove all external power i.e. completely reset the iLO
- Disable/Enable the VID in the BIOS
- Drop the iLO2 back from 2.0 to 1.81
- blow away the array and re-create
- use system erase and restart
- run a BIOS system reset to defaults.
I'm running out of ideas here. Can anyone help? If I could figure out what is mounting these 2 phantom drives I could probably get it going but.....
The system has 12 GB of RAM and 2 Brocade Fibre HBAs - these have been disabled in the BIOS
The machine did have W2008R2 on it but we have decided to go back to W2003

Re: Can't install Windows 2003 on DL380 G5 (with P400 controller)
The server is in a remote datacenter and it has "New Fangled" KVM which offers media via the USB port. This then presents an SD card reader and DVD rom drive.
From here on the other side of the country - that wasn't blindingly obvious
Cheers
