Change a SAS 15K disk in RAID1

Good morning,

I've a Proliant ML150 Gen9 Server with Windows Server 2012 R2 with 2 logical drives, both RAID1 (4 disks) managed by HPE Smart Array. The system is installed in 146GB SFF 15K SAS drives and one of them is blinking green/amber (which means that failure is inminent).  The HP code of these 2 SAS disks is 653950.

I have 2 questions. First, these disks are hot-plug, so for replacing the failing one, can I replace it with the Windows running and the RAID1 with rebuild by itself? Or I have to shut down Windows and enter HP Smart Array utility?

Second, I'm installing a 300Gb SFF 15K SAS drive (P28028-B21). When the RAID is rebuilt, is it possible to change the second 146Gb disk with another 300Gb new drive and expand the RAID capacity? And if possible, can I do it from Windows, or I have to shut down and enter HPE Smart Array Configuration?

I hope I've explained myself well and you can guys help me.

Best regards, Xabier!

Hello,

Thanks for the answer. I've read those 2 links, but they don't seem to answer my doubts, or maybe I've miss something.

Re: Change a SAS 15K disk in RAID1

Hi,

this first Answer is done by a Bot.

Relax, it's an HPE Smart Array Controller.
Simply pull the Failed Disk Online (Windows running) wait a Minute and replace it with the replacement Disk.
The replacement Drive can be bigger, no problem.

Rebuild starts automatically, you will see the Drive Green Blinking while Rebuilding.

Yes, if Rebuild is done, you can change the other Drive and after this rebuild is done, extend the Array, then the Volume.
Also Online, if your Smart Array has a Write Cache with a good Battery.

Use the HPE SSA for Monitoring and Extend Online.

Re: Change a SAS 15K disk in RAID1

Good morning,

Everything went as you said, thank you so much. Previously I've installed other "HP Array" software and it told me that no controller was detected.

The RAID1 rebuilt in less than an hour and the client told me to change the 2nd disk with another 300Gb disk, so they can expand C: drive.

Thank you again Cali, have a nice day!

Xabier.
