Changing Xeon E5-2690 v3 to Xeon E5-2680 v4 in ProLiant DL380 gen9
Hi,
I have in my home office two ProLiant servers. DL380 gen9 and DL360 gen9. The DL380 has Xeon E5-2690 v3 processors with SPS firmware 3.1.3.21.0 and system ROM P89 v2.92. The DL360 has Xeon E5-2680 v4 processors with SPS firmware 3.1.3.21.0 and system ROM P89 v2.30.
My question is, can I use the V4 processors in the DL380 just by installing them. The DL380 is my older server, main server, and the DL360 is newer one to be used as a backup server. I want to switch the processors from DL360 to DL380 and vice versa.

I've reading those documents, earlier and now again, but I didn't find clear answer to my question. Is the processor change possible without any software change or not?

After reviewing the quick specs, it appears that both processors are supported on both servers. I recommend opening a support case with HPE to confirm if a swap is possible.

Betreff: Changing Xeon E5-2690 v3 to Xeon E5-2680 v4 in ProLiant DL380 gen9
It is possible to change the processors, but you need to update a special item (sps-me) on the motherboard of the DL380Gen9 to support v4 CPUs. There was a special Rompaq to update this item. It was only supported under Windows with iLO drivers installed. I have done this 2018 for two DL380 Gen9 systems.
I dont know if the DL360 Gen9 with v4 CPUs supports the older v3 CPU. Different motherboards for v3 and v4 systems.
