Compaq Proliant 3000 Configuration
I have a Compaq Proliant 3000 Server with a Compaq 5302 SCSI Raid Controler card and 7 4.3 Gig Hard Drives. I want to configure the system so that 5 of the disks would make up a RAID array and the other 2 drives would be for the system partition as mirrored drives drive 0 being the primary drive and drive 1 being the mirror of 0. When I set up the raid configuration in the controller card and ran the smart start software every thing seemed to go fine. When I go to load Novell Netware 5.1 on the system I am not able to create any partitions with the fdisk program due to it saying you must have a fixed disk to use the program. How do I fix this? Note there are 2 68-pin scsi output's on the back of the drive cage and 2 scsi ports on the array controller and 2 scsi ports on the main board. I was able to set up 7 separate drives when connected to the main board and install the operating system but can't do the same using the array card.

Re: Compaq Proliant 3000 Configuration
Stephen:
You need to set the boot order of the system to use the 5302 as the First Boot Device.
If you still have the system partition utilities loaded on the disk, you can Hit F10 when it boots up. If you do not, or have wiped it out, you can still configure the server with the System Configuration Diskettes: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/13227.html
Once you have saved the configuration with the 5302 as the first boot device, then go throught the ACU to creat your arrays.
Hope this helps! -john

Re: Compaq Proliant 3000 Configuration
It would seem that he has already run a version of the RAID configuration. You have created 2 logical drives from 2 arrays correct? one from a mirrored set 2 drives with one logical drive and another RAID5 from the remaining drives with one logical drive. All good.
Now you need to load the driver for the RAID card at the Novell install to have the OS see the drives on the controller, hence the logical drives you have created. Without the driver, the OS will not 'see' the logical drives on the 5302. Download the Installation manual for the controller from support.hp.com for help

Re: Compaq Proliant 3000 Configuration
Thanks for all your help. I had not realized that you need to assign all the drives to an array of some sort. I had assigned drives 2-6 to the RAID 5 Array and did not do any thing with drives 0 and 1. Now that the drives are all assigned I was able to install novell and added the drivers for the 5302 and it is working fine now.
